I want to buy my buddy's 2000 Mako 192 with a 2000 Evinrude Ficht Ram 150 motor. I have heard bad things about the early motors but I have also heard that OMC fixed the problems for the 2000 model years. Is this a decent motor? It only has 40 hours on it. Would you guys take your family off shore in this boat with this motor on it? Any help would be appreciated.

1999 was a very bad year for OMC Ficht V6s, Mako.

Some have never missed a beat, but far too many have blown up. Bombardier probably would be of no help.

I would pass, or buy the boat without the engine.

Good luck. :)

I would price the vessel considering engine replacement as a factor. Whatever hours you can get from the the existing engine, consider "upside".

I lucked out and replaced my old carbed 150's with two FICHT 115's. The 4 cylinger units run great and use about 1/3 (?) the fuel and oil of the carbed 150 OceanRunners.

FICHTS had their problems, but the 115's on my Mako are the best engines we have had! This will be the 5th pair of OMC outboards on this old hard working gal!

Re: 2000 Evinrude Ficht Ram 150 Good motor?

I have a 2000 150 Fict Ram and have had good luck with it. The only problems I had was a bad up lift oil pump, and a leaking injector. The oil pump was covered under warranty. The injector was found to be leaking (I had a knock at RPM 3000 and higher) after the warranty period. The problem happened at the end of the 2002 season so I left the boat at the dealer. The dealer talked with Bombardier and they helped solve the problem. The factory had the dealer pull the top of the motor and check the pistons, they were perfect. A compression check showed one cylinder to be higer than the rest. The cause was an injector sucking in air. The knock was predetination. Bombardier payed for the labor, and replaced the injector. Since then the motor has run excellent. I just took the boat from Fairhaven Ma out to the South side of Martha's Vinyard and back. The motor ran great and sipped fuel. My brother could not get over the fact that my gas guage hardly moved! The only negative on the motor and it goes for all of the fuel injected motors ( including Yamaha) is that the cost to prep them at the beginning of the season is high compared to a carburated motor. Other than that I am pleased. Ted
