2000 Evinrude Ficht Stalls While Trolling

Gotta a question for ya. Today I was out on the lake and after about 15 mins of trolling in a slow-no-wake zone my engine started to sputter and die like it was being starved of fuel. Primer bulb was firm, but pumped it anyways and after 2-3 minutes the engine fired back up only after I had the throttle all the way up. I throttled down and the engine continued to run very smooth and was fine for the rest of the trip. This also happened to me that last few times I took it out last year, just thought I had some bad fuel, but this fuel is fresh. Any ideas what might be the issue? All the times it has happened I have always been able to get her started again, but I don't want to take anymore chances. I also don't think it's a good idea to starve the engine of fuel for the sake of the injectors and for any other reason. I did not have any check engine or warning lights come on during the stalling. Thanks for your help!

might be the injectors might be a little dirty.
There is a product on the market called seafoam you might want to get a can of this and add to your gas tank. Just follow directions on can and it will clean the injectors and even if that is not the problem it will do you motor good. good luck

Actually when i put in the fresh fuel in a few days ago I added some bombardier fuel system cleaner....The engine runs very smooth at all rpms with no hesitation...just has this issue of stalling, now that I think about it the engine did stall at the end of last year when I was going w.o.t as well when I was trolling for no apparent reason.

I just called the dealer and they said they are two weeks out...fun fun. Do you think it will hurt the engine to run it this upcoming weekend? I was hoping to get some boating in during the nice long holiday weekend.

Ficht's eat up spark plugs, have you changed them, my 150 Ficht will idle like crap on old plugs, anything over 50 hours.

FYI you don't really need a primer bulb on a DI motor, it's kind of like pumping the gas on a fuel injected car, pointless, mine didn't even come with one, I would take it out of the fuel line if I were you, if it starts to go bad, and they do, it could be affecting the pressure in the fuel system, which is integral to engine performance with Direct Injection. The bulb is only used on carbs to fill up the bowl before starting, the lift pump on a DI will keep a constant pressure in the system.

Old thread, but I'll answer it for the next FICHT person. I had the same problem on twin fichts that were used in saltwater. I changed plugs, I checked fuel etc. Problem started at 600 hrs and went from minor to more frequent at the thousand hour level. Eventually the problem spread to the other engine. The EMM overheated and caused me to send the injectors and emm off to DFI in Alabama. when I bolted the stuff back on the engine ran real smooth, started quickly and the stalling quit. Humm.... I thought. I called the DFI Technology guys and they said between old software and dirty injectors all sorts of good things happen when you get the injectors clean and rematched to your EMM. The $1000 or so dollars isn't that much when you consider that a 7/16 wrench and a screw driver can remove all your components and it all can be done in your driveway without the need of a service Tech. From now on I'll be attempting to keep my injectors clean and won't hesitate to call DFI before I go to the boatshop. Also, he's another ficht thing. A boat mechanic I really respect was on-board another FICHT boat when the an engine acted up. He removed the cowl and put an icepack on the water cooled EMM. Within a few moments the engine ran better. Immediatley the highly secessful marine professional announced "I think you need to clean your Fuel Vapor Cooler". It seems his EMM was hot and all sorts of weird stuff was happening. Sure enough, some hours later the same occured in one of my two engines. I removed the crud from the cooling chamber and all was fine.

If its a 2000 and lift pump has not been changed I would highly suggest it as several changes were made to diaphram materials and gaskets. If the lift pump gets weak it will not flow enough fuel to keep the vapor separator tank filled ,but bulb will be almost firm. This can cause stalling but engine will run fine on top end and if the under cowling water separating/fuel filter has not been changed do it also.
