My Johnson 115 has been running a little warm, and I'm trying to change the water pump. I have removed the bolts indicated by my shop manual, and removed the cotter pin from the shift linkage, but the lower unit won't drop off.

I tried moving the shift lever into reverse like the manual says, but no joy.

What am I doing wrong?

After you removed to cotter pin did you push the shift linkage in sideways?? That is what releases the linkage. But it won't work with a strain on the linkage. Put the big bolt back in the bottom of the lower unit and snug it up. Then try to release the shift linkage.

After removing the hitch pin from the shift arm,the shift arm needs to be pushed in or to port to separate the shift rod from the split coupling. This may be made easier by also disconnecting the shift cable from the linkage. Before doing this however,I recommend making up a couple of the bolts that hold the lower unit on to remove the strain on the shift rod.
