2000 Johnson 130 knocks on deceleration from WOT

I think i have my motor close on its adjustments but I noticed something the other day I had noticed occasionally before. After running at WOT for a while if I come off of plain real quick I get a pinging like spark knock or maybe piston slap. Only happens between 2500 and 4000 rpm on deceleration and is almost non existant when I come off slowly. Carbs done, Linked and Synced, timing correct, idle mixture correct (turned out 1/8 to 1/4 from lean sneeze position), compression 125 on all cylinders. Am I hearing the reeds or is there something more sinister lurking?

1/8 to 1/4 from lean condition seems to lean to me is that where you got the highest idle rpm from your motor ? I adjusted my carb's from 3 1/2 turns out then tried to get the best rpm from each carb by turning 1/8 turn at a time in and or out in each direction until I got the best RPM with the boat in the water and in forward gear until all four were done. did I do them wrong ?

They will do that on "Quick Decel". Part of what you may be hearing is the prop overrunning the clutch dog in the lower unit. That sound transfers up.

I have a 1999 150 that makes the same noise, as you said only on quick deceleration. I haven't notcied much lately because it just made me stop slowing down quickly. Makes sense what DJ was saying about the clutch dogs. I too was wondering about that. Glad to see that I'm not the only one.

Thanks DJ, never considered stress on the drive train. I will be more vigilent when slowing the boat down.

Greg, I adjusted to my highest idle by turning in from 3.5 turns. At 2 to 2.25 turns out from seated on each of my carburetors I got my highest RPM and occasional lean sneeze. At that point boat was leaned out enough that was starving for fuel when the throttle was mashed down and it hesitated. Backed each carb out roughly a quarter turn (richen the mixture) so they are at 2.25 to 2.5 turns out now. No more lean sneeze, no hesitation, and nice plugs with tan coloring on the insulator.

You should find more info on this by searching the 150 V6 60 degree engines. have not seen a 130 do this. On the 150 change one of the jets in the carb 1 size. On the 130 I would verify idle timing, and carb jet size are correct. Engine is very lean when this happens. Some of the V8s have valve that richens the mixture during decel.

Any idea on what size that would be or a part No. Sounds like I should look into it.

I have a '97 115 60 deg. that does the same thing,it's been that way since I got the boat 2.5 years ago. I can't figure it out only does it on a quick deceleration. I just ease it off most of the time and live with it.

Hi Guys, just new to the new site here, so far it has been a great help. I have a 2000 Johnson 90 hp Ocean Series that makes that same knocking sound when decelerate. I only noticed for the first time the other day. Should I not be worried about it. Also, does anyone know where I might be able to purchase the manual for it online??? I would really love to have one.

Thanks.

I would change the jet 2 sizes. The jet to change is the mid range, intermediate jet. This jet is an air jet smaller will give more fuel. You will have to id jet in your carb, then hunt a jet. Carbs and intake should be checked for air leaks before jet change.

Plate on side of carb is one problem source. Sometimes the gasket will be sucked into and closing the passage. You should be careful changing the jets, Oem manual should id jet and function.
