I'm not putting down an aftermarket LU. I've read both good and bad things about Stern Drive. I just want to get this over with and identify the lower unit that is on my engine. LOL in all honesty all this research has taught me a lot

Yes bud ..😃
The reason for this thread was trying to identify what LU is on my engine.. Original LU for my J2000 has internal water screens.

Your original unit(batwing) had bolt in plastic inlets. The one you have on there now has cast inlets with plastic internal screen.

In my opinion the original lower unit to your motor had a design flaw.-----The lower unit on there now is a good one.----But if you just bought this motor you never know what was installed.-----I would take that apart in a heart beat for inspection / new seals.----Easy for me to do !

Yes that is the idea. I had a little water in the oil when I changed it for the winter. I have no idea what water pump or seals were put on so my plan is to change everything out. I just thought someone might be able to ID this lower unit. Once I get it pulled I will update this thread. Thank you everyone I appreciate it

So to clarify>>>
"The easiest way to tell if it is a 60° V-4 motor is the pan mounted trim switch is on the port side."
Also you're saying my outboard uses many years LU's
If/when i need to order maintenance parts what year do look up?
Thats where my confusion is

You can not identify motors by a trim switch.---They did not make a crossflow 90* V-4 in 2000 model year.-----Your lower unit could be from about a 78 to a 98 model 90* crossflow.-----You will see that impeller is the same for all years.----Seal kit is the same part # as well.

It is a 2 piece driveshaft.----And yes when it is not installed and held in the center it will leak !!-----It is held in place ( centered ) by the crankshaft.

Just to update. Replaced drive shaft seals and good to go. Pressure tested and no leaks. Put LU back on and what a pain to get the shift rod back on the lever. I dropped the side pans and removed the air silencer. When reinstalling the air silencer there is T with small tubes i think for a vent. My question, are they connected to the air silencer somewhere im overlooking. Thanks in advance

On my '98 Johnny 150HPV6, the air silencer has 2 connections to the recirculation system. The vapor pump has a tee and the two hoses go to the upper silencer and upper main bearing vent, respectively. The port balance tube is connected to the lower part of the silencer. Does that help?
