I'm looking at a 2000 lb., Deep V hull aluminum boat with a 3 litre Mercruiser I/O.

Is this adequate power? What kind of planing time and top speed could I expect with this rig?

Aluminum affords you to use a smaller engine because of the light weight. You should be fine .Charlie

Thats about a par weight for what a 3.0 is designed to push around, without knowing the actual size of boat your considering I would guess a 3.0 should run is between 40-45 WOT depending on how much extra gear you load on. Is this a new or used boat?

Just for comparison my 16ft fibreglass weighs about 1900lbs with two adults aboard and we get 45 to 50 mph with our 3.0 Yamaha.

>>>>>>>HAPPY BOATING<<<<<<<

Thanks folks. This is a 18'6" aluminum boat. The Princecraft SuperPro FNP 186. It's available with outboard or I/O. I'm leaning towards the I/O for the quiet and fuel economy.

My rule of thumb is to keep the weight to HP ratio below 15%. You are right there. Ski boats go down to 10 and single digits, with bowriders in the low teens to 15%.

Oh, so you haven't bought it yet. Hmm, realize you're boating season can be extended if you go with the outboard. Cause you don't "have" to winterize them. Just lowering the lower unit to drain them will suffice between outings. My Lund I ran year round with the outboard, Now I'm pulling the Grady (inboard) and worrying about winterizing/freezing....

Just some food for thought. Plenty more info on the subject right here if you do a "search".

Good Luck!

PS Also, my Lund was 20', and filled up with gear fast, the outboard would eliminate having an engine box inside the boat.

What engine are they offering as an outboard? The new 4 strokes are just as quiet and economical as inboards.

If I went outboard, I thought I'd go for a 135 Optimax or some other direct injection 2-stroke. Aren't these quiet now?

The boat with the i/o is used (2003 model) so I'd save off new.

My other used choice right now is a similar boat with a 135 V-4 Evinrude. It's a traditional 2-stroke and my concern here is noise and fuel consumption. But it's a hell of a good deal.

If he's buying a newer Mercruiser 3.0L, they've got the quick release drain hoses for the block and manifold... very simple to drain the water and extend the boating season.

Now if only I can have a quick release drain for work I could really extend my boating season :)

--Hise

My boat is a 21 foot Aluminum and weighs 2800 LB with a 1980 3.0L. Planes at 20 MPH without Trim tabs and tops out at 38 MPH.
