Re: 2000 Lund Alaskan SS 20' floor replacement- board mast install

OK I have a problem. I stirred the adhesive for the Nautolex and it doesn't stick to anything. I coated both vinyl and aluminum and let get tacky then clamped to hold it in place. After 48 hours the vinyl is falling off. I am currently trying the outdoor carpet adhesive I mentioned up higher and I'll see how that goes. Maybe a bad batch of glue? I can't believe there isn't something better that will set up quicker and at $22 a quart for the Nautolex aghesive I will need a full frigging gallon to cover the front of my deck... Any suggestions?

How did you stir it? did you use a paint stirer like this in a drill?

Did you roll the vinyl with a roller after you applied it to the surface? Rollers like this carpet roller and laminate roller are worth their weight in gold when doing a carpet or vinyl job.

They embed the vinyl and carpet backing into the glue for the best bond.

You can use all contact cement for an immediate bond, and you still need to roll that stuff too.

HELP!!! I am at a loss with this adhesive. Yes I strirred it up thoroughly. I coated both pieces. I let it air out to get tacky then lightly clamped everything just to hold it in place. I don't see why this would be any different than rolling it, but maybe it is? NONE of the vinyl is sticking to my aluminum hatch covers. It is all just falling off. I tried the outdoor carpet adhesive (big can in background I posted a pic of earlier) that I used for replacing my boat carpet and that isn't any better. I used a waterproof sray adhesive and it is rock solid. I can lift up the whole hatch cover by a tiny corner of the vinyl with no problem. At $22 a quart I really feel like I got screwed. What else can I possibly try with this adhesive? What other adhesive can I use? What am I doing wrong?

I also still have that nasty waxy coating on the deck pieces I coated wth epoxy. I can see trying to use the same adhesive is NEVER going to work. I put those in the sun for a week every chance I got; no change. I tried wiping it off with laquer; no change. This is really bumming me out.

You really do need to roll your vinyl Snow.

Is the 88 sticking to the vinyl and the hatch cover? Try applying another coat to one of the surfaces and put the two pieces together wet (don't let the 88 dry) and see what happens. I think you might have let the two pieces dry for too long.

As for the plywood, hit that with some 100 grit sand paper to knock the waxy stuff off.

Finally have resolved the adhesion issue; user error. If anyone else has an issue with this glue, it needs to sit clamped or taped or whatever for AT LEAST 3 DAYS for the glue to cure. Thanks Jig I was just being too impatient. I also used a 60# piece of lead as a roller to get out the air bubbles.

Re: 2000 Lund Alaskan SS 20' floor replacement- board mast install

Well I have the last few areas glued today after work. What a job this has been waiting for the glue to cure time after time....oh well almost done. Should be putting the new deck in this weekend!

Question; has anyone had flooring come out in pieces longer than 8ft? 2 pieces of my rear deck are 100 inches long! 8ft-4in... How in gods name am I going to replace those? IS there anywhere I can get 3/4 Aruco over 4x8 sheets? Or should I try to find 3/8" and laminate? I'm going to replace the rest over winter when I won't be missing the fishing season and AFTER duck season.

You can special order 4'x10' plywood, but it's very expensive.

Your best bet would be to laminate the 3/8" to size, cheaper and quicker to get.

I rebuilt the floor in my 1988 14 foot Starcraft and my problem was that although the longest piece was only 8 feet, it was more than 4 feet wide. Not wanting to pay for an extra large sheet, I added a joint in my floor. After it was finished, you couldn't tell that it wasn't like that all the time. I'm not sure if your floor layout or support structure (you see to have lots of that) will let you add a floor joint, but that's another way to avoid special ordering a huge sheet of plywood. Good luck. 1988 Starcraft

Thanks snowman. I am leaving early in the morning to look at a used Alaskan and hope to bring it home. I plan on doing a full floor replacement.
