At idle I have the timing at 2 deg. ATDC as per sticker on motor. At 3000 RPM I have 8 deg. BTDC. I would like to know if this is correct,I think it should be more like 18 deg. BTDC. THANK's Mike

You didn't set your timing right. You MUST put the engine into base timing mode on the EST distributor. Then and only then can you adjust the timing, then you have to take it out of base timing mode for the advance to work

How do I do that? Is that when you disconect the front distributor plug and put in a bypass wire?(I think the wire that goes to the shift switch is disconeccted from the distributor and then wire 12 volt to the distributor terminal, then wire the other two distributor terminals together and now you are ready to time engine.) Is this correct I am afraid of messing up distibutor.

Re: 2000-mercruiser 3.0 timing advance

- warm up engine, idled down and choke completely open
- Short the 2 white wires hanging of the distributor
- Short the shift interrupt switch wires
- the engine will dog down and labor, you are in base timing mode, set the timing and recheck the setting after tightening the dist hold-down clamp
- disconnect shift interrupt wires and hook them back up to the switch
- disconnect 2white wires from the distributor
- go boating
