2000 Mercruiser 5.7 Carbed - timing setting

Does anyone know the timing setting on a 2000 Merc 5.7 with a carb? I'm going to look at a friend's boat today that seems to be running rough. Does this particular model need to be put into base timing like some? I just got the call last night, so I haven't had time to get a service manual. Is there one online? Thanks.

10? BTDC and it does need to be put into base timing to adjust both the timing and to adjust the idle mixture. Here is how to put it into base timing.

Thanks Don S. I followed your post. Here is what I did.
Found the timing marks on the damper (the cut line I assumed was TDC) I noticed what looked like the number 10 about 3/4 of an inch to the right of the cut line, marked this with chalk.
Grounded the purple/white wire and stated the engine.
started engine
Set idle to 650
Set the 10 degree mark in the center of the v shaped marked on the timing cover.
Turned off engine
Removed ground.
Was this correct. I wasn't sure if when you put the engine into "base" mode did you time it to TDC or 10 BTDC?

Sounds right to me, did you also check to make sure you were getting full advance?

Hi Don, I wasn't able to check for total advance (my timing light is just a simple induction light). I did rev the engine to about 1300 rpm and noticed the timing mark advancing. Is there a way to check total advancement with a timing light that has that feature.

An easy way to do a quick test, which is all that is needed to make sure it is working, is to make another mark on your vibration dampner at roughly 30? BTDC. You know 10? is already marked and is approx 3/4" from the 0 mark. So 3 times 3/4" is 2 -1/4" So make a mark around 2-1/4" from the 0 mark and with your timing light see if the mark gets in the area of that new mark at around 2500 to 3000 rpm (in neutral). Nothing exact just close.
The total advance for that engine should be between 25 and 35? at around2500 rpm

Could you post how to get the timing into base mode on a 1990 5.7 Mercruiser V8 and do I have to do anything else like disable the switch on the gear selecter?

You probably want to start a new thread, but your 1990 does not have a base mode.
