Re: 2000 Mercury

Are all 115 HP Mercury noisy when going into / Out of gear?
Thanks
Gary C

Depends on what you mean by noise. They all clunk, more so if a heavy stainless prop is on it. If it grinds, you are either shifting at too high an RPM, or shifting too slowly.

The "shifter" is a straight dog clutch. It is either in gear or out of gear. They can take the clunk at the specified RPM (usually 700, but for sure under 1000). Slowly shifting them and letting them clatter takes the corners off and wears them out.

Shouldn't be any noise going into neutral. If there is, it is hitting the other side, and the cable is misadjusted.

hope it helps
