With the proper prop to pull skiiers out you'd probably top out around ~35. Of course, that's just a guess.

Looks like there is no such Monterey as the 185. There is a 186 Montura that came with a 4.3L 190 hp and weighs in at an exceptionally light 2200lbs or the 180 Edge which came with the 4 cylinder you mentioned. That 180 comes in at 2000lbs which is a feather weight. Assuming you have the 180 not the 186 Montura in your sights, I would bet you could break 40mph on GPS with the appropriate prop. I would say a 3.0 is a good match for that boat.

Montereys here in MN are not well known and you just don't see many. When I bought my Chap a couple years back, I found a one owner I believe 1999 or 2000 Monterey 196. It was a trailer queen and just didn't get used much. Of all the boats I looked at in that 2000ish range it was toward the top of the quality and amenity scale. I realized that there was a sort of genesis in the early 2000's with boat style and quality. Many of the 1990's boats just looked old and some maintained that old style into the early 2000's. Even the colors were pretty dated. The Monterey was one of the few that seemed to adopt a nicer more contemporary style early on. One reason I didn't buy the Monterey was that it had the base engine and most all of that model I found on the internet had the upgraded engine so I was turned off to it. Now I say all this and I recall there is some differences between the basic 180 edge and the 196 Montura. I would guess the 180 Edge is not quite the same quality wise as the 196 Montura as it is the most entry level boat that year. Boat technology and style seemed to take many years to change. Like a Pontiac Bonneville I had at one time. Pontiac made the exact same car for 7 years in the 1990's with only minor tweaks from year to year. One reason I have the boat I have is because Chaparral produced it in identical fashion from 2002 through 2007 with minor tweaks. A low hour 2003 was simply cheaper than a low hour 2007 but the hull is 100% identical and the interior is 95% the same. I would find as in my example the beginning of the 7 year run of any given boat model.

After looking at 4W, Glastron, VIP, Tahoe, Larson, Sea Ray and Crownline, I ended up buying a Monterey. The price was definitely a consideration ($18k for a $34k boat), but it was definitely a cut above the rest as far as options/fit/finish went.

I haven't actually driven the boat yet, so I can't really talk too much about longevity and quality, but I'm hoping. ;)

A couple of those brands aren't fair comparisons to a Monterey in the used smaller boat segment. Glastron/Larson and especially Tahoe though I would swear the newest models of most every brand have really taken that next step. I have even seen some new Tahoes that are really nice. I always go back to the weight however. An 18 footer that is 2200 lbs and another that is 3000 lbs speaks volumes to me when they have the same power package. I suppose you can dress anything up with bling but you can't hide 36+% difference in build heft.

When you're looking for a boat and you're looking for an 18 footer, all the brands are fair comparrisons.

I don't really see your point. On the weight, I definitely can, as a light 18 ft would probably be fine with a 3.0, whereas in a heavier model you'd probably want to step that up to the 4.3...which is the route I went.

Of course, a heavier boat will appeal to someone who runs in a lot of chop vs. someone who runs on flat water all the time...from what I understand, the heavier the boat, the better they tend to handle the waves.

Anyway, from what I've seen so far, I'd put the Monterey up against any of the best name-brands, be it the expensive Bayliners (Sea Ray), Chapparel, etc..

Cobalt might be a step up, but I've never actually seen one of them in person...and I don't think they make an 18 footer anyhow.

Subliminal, I think you're reading jkust wrong. He's saying Montery is a higher level brand than those others.

Yes that is right. For that vintage, my opinion is Monterey is a better boat than some of those. But, then the newest 2009's and 2010's for most of the brands I have seen have caught up to each other brand asthetics wise. The bar has been raised so since they all look so nice and contemporary, the weight is always a key element to see which are not just a nice presentation. It seems heavy boats cost more than the same length lighter boat no matter how blingy or nice they look. A heavy 18 footer rides so nice compared to a light 18 footer especially if all 18 feet of hull ride in the water and there is no step up at the back. Probably not a faster ride but a nicer ride.

That makes sense...I did read it wrong. I do agree, though, that these days most boats seem to be built pretty darn well.

Yeah, it really is hard to 'bash' any brands' new models especially on the trailer. They all finally started paying attention to their designs.
