Re: 2000 Nissan 9.9 four-stroke

I have a 2002 9.9, 4 stroke with electric start and alternator. I never owned a Nissan before but this is an excellant smooth and quiet motor. Just as good as the last Honda 4 stroke I had for about 800 bucks less...

Early pre -oil filter type 9.9 motors held very little oil ,check often. They do have a oil screen that screws out.Itis made of stainless steel and needs only to be cleaned with carb cleaner be careful of the o-ring reinstall.Dont clean it it will gunk up restrict oil flow oil light will come on engine will shut down when you try to accelerate. The cdi modules are weak and fail after a few years almost 300.00 a pop.All and all they are a pretty good motor !!!!!!!

Re: 2000 Nissan 9.9 four-stroke

Thanks to all that replied. I can say that I had this motor and had lots of problems. I'm not saying that all Nissan is bad just the one I had.
It was a learning experience being a first time boat owner and all. I had problems with this motor leaking oil. I was told that I had too much oil. The first Nissan dealer I went to told me this and charged me $73.00. All he did was drain and refill. It would not leak for him. Went on a week long fishing trip and it leaked some the whole time. Took it to another dealer. Told me the same thing. Looked it over changed the oil and DID NOT charge me a dime. Figured out later anytime I tilted the motor I was leting oil in the valves. The valves had to get rid of it and it ended up in the water. Last problem, the one Nissan couldn't even solve. I would be running the motor and it would start bogging down like it wasn't getting fuel. Then it would be fine for a little bit and do it again. I would take it to the dealer and they would put it in their tank at the shop. Run it for hours, no problem. Take it to the lake 5-30 minutes it would act up. After taking it to the dealer and Nissan ****ing around not knowing what to do. Cabelas was nice enough to take it back and replace it. I bought the 18 HP
4-stroke Nissan and haven't had a bit of problems.
Be carefull if you buy from Cabellas and then want service from your local dealer. The dealer that charged me $73 didn't like it that I bought mail order. The second dealer didn't care and never charged me a dime. Of course they never fixed it either. It was under warranty but I guess if it had too much oil in it(Which it never did) then I could be charged. That is my story with Nissan. They do make good motors I just got a bad one out of many good ones.
