OK so I have rebuilt the Carb, replaced coil, replaced fuel lined fuel filter siphon hose in tank, checked fuel pump had 7 psi at idle when I could keep it running for 30 secs. Set timing to 10 btdc, adjusted idle mixture screws, its a fairly new motor only 40 hours. It ran good till one day all this started. I'm kinda lost.have done many searches and that's why I have replaced what I have.anyone help?

All that work, and either your alternator isn't working or you have a blown diode.
Read this, and I bet you will understand your system a bit more.

Are you testing the fuel pump pressure when it dies, or when it's cranking?

I disconnected the fuel line before when I could get it to run for about 30 sec and let the engine idle . So in short the engine was running and I got 7psi till it died. I also installed a in line filter so I could see fuel flow. Could the coil overheat from to much current from alt and shut down?

How long after it dies until you can restart it?

After it dies, do you have spark?

Re: 2000 volvo 5.7 gl wont stay running

If it starts right back up and repeats with a 15-30 engine run before it dies, then you have an alternator, broken wire, or a diode problem.

Just to test things out, pull the fuel pump relay out, make a jumper wire with male tabs on the end the size of the relay tabs. Then put the jumper between the 87 and 30 terminals (the pump will start running) then see how long the engine runs.
Be sure to remove the jumper wire after the test.

Keep it handy on the boat. if the relay or the alternator fails out on the water, it can get you home.

Getting frustrated And running out of things to replace lol.

That seems to be what always happens. Don't know what the problem is, so buy a bunch of parts and start throwing parts and money at it until you run out of money or get frustrated because it still doesn't work. Happens all the time. Bet you didn't buy a service manual either.

Service manual what's that lol no I didn't I figured replace the basics you know spark, air, and fuel. But its usually the little things that kick your butt. I have read a lot of posts on here and you seem to be the walking manual so was hoping you'd chime in.

OK so I jumped the wires tested pump it works. Reconnected fuel line, jumped wires again started engine it ran good for a min or two then back to dieing, when engine died fuel pump was still running so I don't think is it. Then would start right back up and run for a few sec each time.

Would the module cause this? While running I did check timing it was on.

Also just asking is the system like a car will it run off the battle. If the alt is bad or will it stall out?

Re: 2000 volvo 5.7 gl wont stay running

OK got it running it was the idle mixture screws needed an extra half inch out.

No I'm playing with the cent advance springs had Med and no real advance at 2000 rpm so going with the lite one to see how that goes. The old one broke (rusted).

1/2 inch or half turn. If it took half an inch, you have a problem.

Re: 2000 volvo 5.7 gl wont stay running

I've seen a lot of threads about mech advance springs breaking and no replacement for them. Well with a little tweaking I have something that works.

I bought the spring kit from the auto store ( Mr gasket ) with 3 sets in it soft, Med, and heavy. I tried all 3 no really gave me advancement the springs were shorter and had to stretch to much. So take the old spring keep 2 ends cutting the old spring leaving just the circle part and attach it to the weight.hook the black spring (soft one) onto the loop on the weight and crimp old loop making it secure. The hook other end to the anchor point.

I set my timing to approx 10 btdc approx 3/4 inch from 0 then rev it up and it advanced to I'm guessing 30ish ( 2 1/4 ) from 0 btdc.

I got these measurements from an old post on here so I believe them to be correct I think it was one of your posts don.

If I'm wrong stop me now lol it runs great and no ping or backfire revving it up now.
