I have a 2000 Volvo Penta 5.7L GS with 750 hours on it. It is RWC and has been used in both salt and fresh water. I replaced the manifolds 3 years ago with Barr, and the risers 4 years ago with OEM volvo.
In early July I started to experience rough running condition at idle speed (misfiring) if I was able to get it up on plane it ran great. Long story short I found out that my cylinders on the port side were filling with water.
I replaced the riser gaskets on both sides of the motor with the new Volvo metal type. I filed the surfaces clean and torqued them correctly, etc. All was well for a week, and the problem returned.
I installed a new set of volvo riser gaskets, and this time used copper sealant on them as well. Everything has been fine until yesterday. After an hour of idle speed the motor began to misfire and shut down. When I went to restart the engine was hydrolocked. I pulled the spark plugs and cranked the engine over, I had water in the port side again, and also a little trickle on the starboard side rear cylinder. I ran the boat the 8 miles to the marina and it ran great, idled into the dock for 10 minutes and never had a problem either.
What should I do? There is no water in the oil, oil is clean. Boat runs awesome up on plane. Does this sound like riser gaskets or do I have something else going on? Seems like it loads up with water after extended idle/low RPM operation.
Thanks to all!
