My husband and I are considering buying my neighbor's boat. We live in Coastal Georgia, therefore, it would be used for salt water fishing, crabbing, etc. The boat was purchased new in 2001 buy an owner in Fla. He had it for about nine months, and he purchased something larger. My neighbor purchased it in 2002, and since then he has used it about a total of 10 times. He has kept it very well maintained. The boat has a 125 HP Mercury Motor. He is asking $6,500 for boat, motor and trailer. It is in excellent condition. My neighbor took us out in it yesterday with my husband at the wheel. He said it was a little rough, but adjusting the trim, etc seemed to even out the ride.

We have never owned a boat, although we are not new to boats. I was wondering what you "experts" thoughts about the type of boat as well as the price.

Thanks so much for your feedback!!

Trophy (Bayliner) in those years do not have the best reputation but if it's been well maintained and the price is right, it sounds like a good starter boat. Have it surveyed. Determining value will be very difficult - check listings for similar boats. Good luck.

Oh, and expect that you will also be shopping for a bigger boat within a few years.

If you don't mind...why do they have such a bad reputation during those years. I understand that Bayliner had a bad rep., but the 2001 is before Trophy was purchased by Bayliner...right? Maybe I have that backwards. At any rate, is it poor construction, rough riding, etc. The stringers are all fiberglass, not wood. I am not trying to justify the purchase, just trying to get all of the facts before negotiating. Thanks!!

I have owned several boat over my lifetime and currently own two boats,a 1999 Chris Craft and a 1999 Trophy 17' CC. Although the Trophy t is not a super well boat, it is not that bad. My boat was heavily used but considerably cheaper then yours (2750). Value is somewhat location dependent so I cant say if 6500 is good deal. If you like the boat and it is good shape nothing wrong with Trophy IMO.

That is good to know. I guess you have some people who like Chevys and some who like Fords...it's all relative. Thank you for your feedback!
