I'm currently looking at a 230LX Stingray to use on a small lake. The dealer wants 14,500 for it. It has the 5.7 EFT and the bravo III outdrive and 130 hours. The interior/exterior is in like new shape I couldn't find a nick on it. I'm wonering if anyone has had problems with this boat/motor/outdrive?

Any info on this boat and or advice about this price for the year and model would be greatly appreciated. Getting back into boating after a 5 years of dry land.

Thanks

What do you think a Fair price would be then?

Nada puts it right around there for the value.
With this economy and the price of gas.......Boats are a dime a dozen.
The leverage is on your side at this time.
But IF you really like the boat, buy it and go boating.

And welcome to iboats. :D

What are you willing to pay??......................someone else's idea of a "good deal" or "to much" can be scewed by a load of variables. Do a little "local" home work (compare like craft asking prices) and set a price you can live with. Good Luck.

Anybody else have a comment on the boat/motor/outdrive? Is there anything in particular to pay attention to on the Stingrays or to watch out for?

Thanks in advance!

Thats a great engine drive package.................As for the craft itself Stringray makes a quality product...................130 hours thats less than 2 years use for me...............as long as the maintaineince (sp) was done..............you should be good to go. ;):)

Re: 2001 230LX Stingray, need advice

I have noticed that the stingrays seem to be priced lower than a lot of the other brands. Is this because they were cheaper when new or do they depreciate fast?

I have been checking this forum for Stingray info and there really isn't that much about them good or bad. I know they have the ZP Hull which is designed to be faster than deep V hulls I'm used to. The question I have is does the Hull make it easier to pull skiers or tougher?

Also, my last boat was a '89 Celebrity that had many issues. The interior cushions and other vinyl came apart. I'm wondering if this problem is common with the Stingray product because I don't want to deal with that again.

Come on Stingray owners give me a shout!

Re: 2001 230LX Stingray, need advice

Stingrays are great. I have not been in the 23 foot LX, mine in the 19 foot LX version. I find the quality and the build to be real good. I have to admit, when I sit in my buddies chaparral, the vinyl does feel a little heavier, the hardware a little thicker and nicer, but still I see screws coming loose, etc. Stingrays probably were priced more in the middle to lower range of the 23 foot boats when new, so their resale will be in the middle to lower range. They do say they target performance at a value price. That was one of the reasons I could get into a 19 because I had a tow weight limit, and the Stingray at 19 feet and with an 8 person capacity was almost between 500 and 800 lbs lighter than comparable used 19 foot boats from their competitors.

Here is what I know about the zplane hull. Its a go fast hull that prefers speed. It is not a good low speed planer and is very sensitive to trim. This is where most people complain about the boats. There are two solutions: good-hydrofoil and better-trim tabs like nauticas smart tabs. With these people love the boat and how it performs. I have a foil and mine planes quickly and turns on a dime. It skis great, cruises great, and looks good.

Owners also pretty universally complain about the ski locker in the middle staying wet. Some pull out the carpet and replace it. I would look at this area to see if its got any mold or signs of excessive water sitting in this area.

Finally, I say buy it. The people on the inside of the Stingray website are good people with lots of info. People really seem to love the Bravo set up. You will be flying past more expensive boats over the 50 MPH mark on the speedo. Plus, the LX set up is a comfortable layout.

Best of luck.

it takes far less time to buy a boat than to sell it. offer 65 to 75 % of the asking price, then leave your number and walk away. there are many many boats for sale... that being said, sounds like a really nice boat, post up some pics when you get her home.

Re: 2001 230LX Stingray, need advice

Well I took the boat out with the sales rep on Saturday. The boat ran great and I really liked how fast it got up on plane. I wasn't using the trim correctly and so I didn't get much over 45 MPH on the speedometer. The sales showed me how to trim it just right and we ran up to 55 MPH quickly before backing off. I think it would have topped 60 given a little more time.

Now for the issues I have come across since my last post. The first salesman I was working with told me that it was listed at 17,500 but he thought they only had 14,500 in it so they would take that to get it off the lot before winter. However, this weekend I wasn't working with that guy and the sales manager was calling the shots. He started at 15,600 and after a lot of haggling said that 15,000 was his last offer. I walked and said I may be back in touch but no guarantees.

The prop (twin style on the bravo III) had some oxidation and a little bit of scuff on one blade. Nothing to get bent out of shape about but I still wanted it buffed out before taking it. The steering had maybe an 1/16 turn slack in it. I also asked if they could adjust this. They had no intention of doing either of these items. Oh yea and the hours were now at 149 because the sales manager let someone use the boat last weekend.

Now I guess I wait to see how bad they want to move the boat. My wife says just to go ahead and buy it but I kinda want to see if they will work some more. Great boat though! Fast with a strong hole shot. Ran smooth and the captains call exhaust made for a nice throaty tone while running across the lake. The 23 footer allows a lot of room on board as well. It's not going to fit in the garage though so I will have to pay for storage.

Well what do you all think?

I would stand firm on the original price quoted. (Only because it is an integrity thing) Other than that it is a nice FAST fun boat and $15k is a fair price for it. I had a 2003 for a couple of years and loved it. Sold her to get an offshore fishing rig.

The one I had was powered by a Volvo/Penta Duoprop

A "quoted" price is one in writing.

1/16" play, in the steering is not an issue. If anything, you may have been feeling "V-Hull wander".

Get it home and get out a Brillo pad and go after the props.

I have a 26' Crownline with a 7.4L MPI and a B-III. Also have Captains Call exhausts. Love it. The B-III makes a handling a breeze.
