2001 250 OX66 Bypass Valve

I'm installing a new bypass valve and it's different from my old one. The old one had a cross on each end, the new one has a cross on one end and a half moon shape on the other. My question is, does the cross end go in the grommet in the block or in the spring on the other side. Thanks
