I have the following engine, 0T213768, runs great when shes out there for hours, but a PITA to start. Gotta crank off and on for about 2 -3 minutes. Already killed 1 battery, replaced with new ngk plugs per spec, no difference, bulb is always hard when i pump her up about 6 or 7 times. anyone have anything simple i can check? im thinking like my weed whacker, a couple of cranks when cold while choked and it should fire up.....carbs dont leak from what i can see either as the pressure in the bulb maintains...

thanks for everyone's advice over the years, best site out there!

Are you pushing the key in while cranking it over ?--------Excessive cranking damages the starter and a slow cranking motor is hard to start due to poor spark at low RPM.

no, i am not pushing in the key while starting. does that matter? i can push it in while turning though, i checked it out. what would that do?

is there a way to check the starter to see if it is damaged?

pushing in the key while cranking activates the "choke" and gives it that initial gulp of fuel to start. Try holding it in while cranking and raise the warm up lever slightly. Should make things a lot better.

Are you referring to the throttle lever i am using while driving as the "warm up lever" or is that something different?

Most control boxes have a small " throttle only " lever.-----Or on some there is a method to disable the shift function and the big lever then operates throttle only.-------Take the time to ask / learn how to start your motor.--------It is not the same as a modern car with a " push to start button " and computers / sensors that think for you.-----Sorry to be so blunt.

i do know how to put the control into throttle only mode, i just hit a button and it disengages the tranny, for lack of a better term. thank you all.

So I followed the starting procedures, no change. Gotta crank off and on for about 3 minutes till it fires. Anything else I can check? Perhaps the enrichment value? I'm guessing I should hear a click from the engine when the key is depressed correct? Anyway to check the starter to see if it is spinning fast enough without buying a new one?

A few thing you can try.------Step # 1 is to check whether the enricher works.---Should hear a click or use a screwdriver to your ear on the enricher to see if it does any thing.--------#2 try spraying some fuel into the carburetors while cranking to see if it fires up then.---# 3 Leave plugs in and see if there is spark that will jump a gap of 3/8" or more while cranking.----# 4 --Since a lot of cranking has been done you can check the condition of the starter.----I never recommend buying new parts as a test !!----Take the starter apart and check ohms from commutator to shaft of the armature.-Very easy to do !

So i think i know the problem, i think my enricher valve is missing! i took a bunch of pics, followed the fuel lines and don't see anything like what the part looks like that i found in the manual. the oil tank was removed and i just dump oil in the gas tank and its fine, but perhaps this was removed too?

I don't have the same engine, but here is a good idea of where the enricher connects. If you had a photo like the angle shown here, then maybe you would see the connection......

Where are you on this as compared to your other post on the same subject where you knew not where the "Fuel Enrichment" aka choke hoses connected, posted about a dozen frames from this one that I answered for you this morning after digging through my manual for half an hour.....for what?

I have posted several times on this site the proper starting procedure for this engine. If interested, look them up!
