I am working on a crownline that has the alarm go off when the key is just in the on position but not running. When it’s running the alarm does not sound. It is the oil sensor causing this (if I unhook it, it stops beeping). The owner said it just started this last week. I installed a new sensor and still have the same issue. Why would it beep with the key in the on position only? TIA.

It is a 5.0 gm Volvo Penta GL.

What is the motors serial number?

Do you or he have a manual for the motor?

I am unsure of the serial number. If I think of this correctly. The alarm goes off when there isn’t enough oil pressure, so when the key is just in the on position it would sense no pressure and cause the alarm to sound correct and then once started it sense pressure and shuts off. The alarm has power once key is turned on and I was wondering if something is shorted possibly and it’s only suppose to have power when the motor is running? Just a theory.

I merged threads in VP section, please don't start threads in other sections

Sometimes folks don't see the thread, so post again and bump it. Other times the folks that may know just haven't noticed it. If you look through the motor section (as example) and see who answers most questions. Then send them a PM with link to your thread, this usually gets attention

OK you have a GL but what GL ? A thru E or higher?

The GL can have a few alarm switches to several more, it depends on which one. All of them just ground the Tan/Blue wire. The alarm gets 12V when key is turned ON and any one of the switches that apply a ground will sound the alarm

They can be oil pressure switch, exhaust temp switch, water temp switch and others

Ok sorry for posting in multiple. I have narrowed it to the oil pressure switch. The switch has the tan/black wire. Is it a chance the alarm could be malfunctioning? Once I unhook the oil sensor it stops beeping. Then hook it back up and start it and it stops also. Only sounds while the key is on position and not running. It stops immediately once motor is running. The switch would ground out when it sense no pressure correct? Which would be every time the key is on but not running? I’m just confused because it seems like it shouldn’t allow the alarm to trip unless it was running? Maybe I’m looking at it all wrong.

If {note the IF) the alarm is ON when motor is OFF and key is ON then this is normal for the oil pressure switch

Once motor starts, pressure increases and opens the switch so it removes the ground on the alarm turning it off

Ok thank you. I understand the if. I do believe this is what’s happening, but the owner said he didn’t think it ever did that before and he bought this boat new.

Don't know if VP used what "sometimes" some boat manufactures used which was a time delay switch (for lack of a better term). The switch had about 1 minute delay before it would pass 12V to the alarm.

This delay would allow the key to be turned ON and have no alarm. Once started and time ran out power was applied and if something was wrong, the alarm would sound

Maybe the delay has gone bad and now it's instant

Ok that makes sense. Would you happen to know where this delay might be?

In most cases it's behind the helm next to the alarm
Formula uses them

This is a Merc but VP is the same at the helm, note how the alarm is powered
