Re: 2001 gmc pick-up

Lubedude, thanks for the info, where do i find dello 400, I have never heard of it? it sounds like it may clean the build up off the pistons and help quiet things down. like I said earlier tho, it only does it for a few seconds in cold weather. but I would feel a lot better if it didn't do it at all............thanks. again .

Almost any auto parts store will have it, WallMart also caries it in most store, Shucks, Kragen, and Auto Zone. Oh, and NAPA for sure. Dont let anyone sell you another brand or tell you you cannot use diesel oil in a car.

Re: 2001 gmc pick-up

I have a late run 1999 Silverado (same as 2000) with the Vortec and I had piston slap almost from the get go. I kept bugging the service manager and they pulled the engine at 11,000 and rebuilt the engine, still had piston slap, then I started bugging the service dept at GM in Detroit, at 15000 they pulled my old engine and put in a new out of the box factory engine and now I have a quiet engine without slap and an extended warranty. I have heard that since about that time GM settled in on the NORMAL routine for piston slap and chose to do an ignore except they will give those who complain loud and log an extended warranty out to 5-7 years/100K. I don't have the number any more but you should be able to find it. Just remember, He who YELLS the loudest, the longest gets the results. Especially in this case.

kenimpzoom
Member # 13052 posted February 23, 2004 08:37 PM
Piston Slap for the first minute or so when engine is cold is perfectly normal.

I have a 2002 Chevrolet truck with 5.3 liter V8 that has never had any cold start noise. I have 27000 miles right now, many of these engines have noises that are first noticed at the 10000 mile mark or so. My truck also burns absolutely no noticeable oil in 5000 miles plus.

I must have an abnormal engine.

Spark-Chaser, consider yourself lucky. My new engine has 18K on it now and it does not have the slap. My buddy has an 02/03 and his slaps and they told him that was the norm and it does not have adverse effects on engine life, he must beleve it, as his son just bought a new GMC last week.

Be careful about viscosity changes in todays engines. The 5W-20 of today is a much better oil, all around, that anything available five years ago.

If someone blows up an engine and they changed viscosity, the manufacturer has every right to deny assistance. They pay the warranty bills, the folks on this board do not.

On another note, I'm sure GM has its reasons for it's policies regarding this issue. Implying that there is a hidden warranty here is a bit overzealous. If the Fed's even had an inkling that there is anything going on, they would be all over this. GM is not that naive.

We have a '96 Chevy Silverado with the 350 vortec and if the temp is below 40-45 degrees we hear piston slap.

It goes away after 1-2 minutes, and isnt noticable at an idle after about 5 seconds.

The truck has 150K miles on it, and its been driven pretty hard but maintained, it burns no oil and does not smoke at all.

The truck had 10w30 in it and the thing didnt have piston slap that we ever recall, castrol 5w30 is what we are using when we noticed the noise, we will hafta switch to a 10w30 again and see what happens.

DJs right here, if you have one of the new vehicles that specifies a 5W-20, then use a 5W-20. I would still use a synthetic though!
