Here we go again. Car been working fine on that last engine rebuilt but yesterday it started to have a faint but noticeable whining. The whining starts at about 60mph and I can hear it up to 80mph (havent been able to drive it any faster) and it becomes more noticeable with speed. The car must be in 5th gear for you to hear it and above 60mph. I have driven the car in 4th gear close to 80mph and I dont hear it.
I checked the car today and I found the hydraulic clutch reservoir low, right at min. I put more oil but have not bleed the system. Have very low hopes that is the problem. I have to check the repair book to see how to measure the manual transmission oil, I might change it regardless.
Any of you mech there can give me any pointers?

It is interesting you say only in 5th gear....lower rev's..than 4th...there is a possibility the inspection cover is rubbing on flexplate at higher inertia with less torque applied.....in real terms plate wobbles in fifth and makes contact with the cover......just maybe with a check

Your "low hopes" are correct. That isn't the problem. I hope you didn't
actually put oil in the clutch master cylinder resevoir??? It uses brake
fluid.

+++1 on checking trans oil level. That should be the very first thing you
do. If low be sure and use the correct oil. Some manuals actually use
automatic transmission fluid or engine oil instead of gear lube. Definately
change it too.

Hard to diagnose a sound over the internet but if you only hear it in 5th
it's probably a bearing inside the trans. If it's not too loud and only at
high speed you might get by for quite a while. It should slowly get louder
telling you when it's time to worry.

LOL! I used brake fluid but you make a point on making sure. Darn book dont say where the plug is for the transmission oil but I think I can find it after I jack the car up. If I recall right it is not automatic transmission oil, I think it say like 90 something.... I will check the oil level asap. We are not driving it so it might be the weekend...

Since your jacking it up check your u-joints...and pinion seal...could be a bad diff bearing....all the rest would be inside the trannie like a bad cam plate, worn gear..hopfully not....happy hunting

I looked and looked and could not find the filler hole for that manual transmission, it could be that is hidden by something or I am blind, anyone has an idea? My pos book dont show it...

It's a bearing or gear. It is not the differential, the differential does not know what gear the transmission is in.

Fifth gear is an overdrive thus using the gear train to provide an over driving condition. Fourth gear is 1:1, straight through, with no reduction or over drive.

If the fluid is clean and full, it will probably go quite a while before it becomes bad enough to address.
