When setting the float "level with the gasket surface" per the FSM, is that done with the gasket installed on the carb body, or before installing the gasket?

On any that I have done, it's with the gasket installed.

That's the way I read it in the OEM manual for my 94 175. Step 33- install float bowl gasket, step 34- set float level with gasket surface.

Seems to be a difference of opinion.

That's the way I read the FSM, as well, Mr Young. But the photo looks like there is no gasket installed. And the "Top Secret File" sticky says to set it even with the body. I'd surely have to bend the new float a lot in order to get it even with the body without a gasket.

I see what you mean about the picture, I don't see a gasket on there either. I guess I would go with clanton and the instructions in the top secret file then since the text and photo in the factory manual seem contradictory. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Set it level with the float bowl Before putting the gasket on. I've never had a gasket on a float bowl when setting the float level. If you do your float level will be to high.

Something else to watch for. Carb kit comes with a float needle/seat gasket. Some of the plastic carbs did not use this gasket. The float bowl had a raised ridge on the float body to seal the needle/seat, and if you put a gasket on this float bowl, float setting will be way off.

Just set the float parallel to the body. Then test it by blowing in the fuel inlet while carb is upside down. If you can't blow air in the carb while it's upside down then the float is properly set.

That does not make any sense.

With the carb upside down, the weight of the float is against the needle, sealing off the fuel inlet passageway no matter what setting the float is at.

It was late when I posted that. My bad. I used that technique to see if my needle was making a good seal NOT to check correct float level.

Re: 2001 Johnson 150 carb float level

My carbs did not have the plastic gasket installed under the float valve at the factory, so I left it off.

Trying to set the float level with the body without the float bowl gasket would require some serious bending and deformation of the new float. Gasket under the float valve would make it worse. With the float bowl gasket installed, the new float is nearly level with it before making any adjustments. I don't want to destroy 6 new floats unnecessarily.

Anybody know the secret here?
