2001 johnson 25 hp 3 cyl Model J25VL3SIE Ran out of gas won't start.

My Brother let motor run completely out of gas, he removed gas hose from motor and let it run until it ran out of gas, it probably ran for a goog 5 to 10 minutes. I hhoked up gas line used new gas and ball is tight. It did start up for a few seconds . Tried again with no luck. Did he mess up pump? How can I get started again.

Is it fuel injected? You may have to purge the gas line. Look for what looks like a air valve stem on the back of the motor. Release the pressure there and try cranking it again. Repeat until all the air is out.

Is it fuel injected? You may have to purge the gas line. Look for what looks like a air valve stem on the back of the motor. Release the pressure there and try cranking it again. Repeat until all the air is out.

It is fuel inj. No air in valve. I did notice the fuel filter my brother put in, it looks like its in backwards, the arrow is pointing away from where fuel is put in line, will thiscause issues?

If it was my brother I'd cut his fingers off. LOL. Pull the drain plugs out of the carbs and pump the primer bulb until you get fresh fuel out of them. Install the filter correctly. Then try it. If it's still got the oiling system on it, Get Rid of it and mix your fuel 50:1.

Ok I'll try in the AM, thanks. As far as the oiler system, it's not been an issue since I had the motor 8 yrs. Thats a good idea to ditch it, I have the warning system, I'd loke to keep that for overheating and disconnect the warning alarm for low oil level. I sure it would take some removal of things and wiring disconnections. Just might send to shop or read up on doing myself. I Think i saw recently someone on this forum or on marineengines .com explaining how to remove it.

If it is fuel injected, you won't have any carbs. The filter has to be pointing the way of the gas flow. This sounds like your problem.
