Have a 2000 25 hp 3cyl johnson outboard. Started up fine at ramp, went half mile engine shutdown completely, restarted ran half mile engine stopped, started again got to crab spot, idle for a few minutes, engine quit, would not start again, left me standed.Got towed in. This was on saturday, I went to start on Monday (Today) and it started up and is currently running in 50 gallon trash can. Afaid to take it out. Is it something electrical causing to get hot in plastic power pack, I replaced power pack last year, it was doing the same thing as well. Rick
The switch is loose and the lanyard not on very tight, I might replace switch.

What is your model number? Makes it easier to help troubleshoot when we know what we are dealing with. If it has voltage regulator unplug the two yellow wires from the stator and see if that cures it. A bad voltage regulator can cause the symptoms you are describing.

Check the spark when it quits with a spark tester and go from there..
