hey guys I have have a 2001 Johnson 25 hp outboard in my garage that hasn't been used for two years it was sprayed with the storage spray stuff by the owner before me, it was in 100% working order before I bought it but, I haven't used it since I bought it. I was wondering what I should do to it before I go and take it out on the water etc, is there any tune ups etc I should do or take it somewhere first?

Re: 2001 Johnson 25hp question

I would definately drop the lower unit and inspect the water pump, changing the impeller. Put in fresh lower unit oil, with new seals for the drain and vent screws. Im sure the carbs are due for a cleaning and rebuild. I would also go over all connections, file them, emory cloth, whatever and make them shine. Put the battery on the charger and ensure it charges to 12.65 volts. Empty out the old fuel from the tank and lines and add fresh fuel. May also want to pull the plugs and inspect them. You may then want to give it a spark and compression test, just to ensure you are good to go to the water.By far the most important, put the plug in! ;)

Go fishing.

rebuilding the carb has nothing to do with the hours on the motor. it has to do with dried us gas in the carb, blocking jets.

oh ok well me being new to this scene I say thank you for that heads up, how can I tell if they need it, or should I just assume they need it and do it?

After setting that long they will need it. Clogged jets can cause engine damage buy running pistons dry.The carbs are simple and the kits are cheap..

I'm sorry I didn't understand what you meant there^^^ I assume you meant to say if I don't I will have to rebuild my motor if the carbs arn't done?

Re: 2001 Johnson 25hp question

either one, the impeller or the carbs. the 2 cylinder will run on one cylinder. if the carbs are not right, it can run on both, but not deliver the right mixture to the cylinders, the correct fuel ( which is a gas and oil mixture) is the only lubrication a 2 stroke motor gets. if too lean it does not get enough lubrication, too rich, gets too much and the motor build up carbon. both can do damage to the motor. the impeller is what pumps water to cool the motor, 2 minutes without water at full throttle, and you have a lump of expensive scrap metal. too little oil will do the same.

yea very true I definately don't want that, now I may even take it to a johnson dealer to ensure it gets the proper look over as i am not boat motor savy, do you think its a good idea or are they like car dealerships who charge for unnecessary work?

hang around the boat ramps, talk to people, find out who they recommend in the area, they will tell you who screwed them.

Re: 2001 Johnson 25hp question

a little update, I had called the previous owner of the motor he said the gas was drained from the motor before storage so thats a plus, do I still need to worry about the carbs or can I eliminate that? I think I will still have them inspected to be safe but just wondering your thoughts
