2001 Johnson 30 HP Shift Linkage Adjustment

2001 Johnson 30 HP Model#: J30EVLSIA

The outboard shifts from neutral to forward OK. Going back into neutral from forward the prop stays engaged into forward gear.

In order to shift back into neutral from forward, the engine operator must move the remote control a little past neutral (almost slightly into reverse).

The outboard engine shifts OK into reverse. The engine also shifts from reverse back into neutral OK.

The only problem is shifting back into neutral from forward.

The shift linkage connection to the gearcase on this model is inside the raw water pickup. (SEE PICTURES). Also posted is a photo of the connection from the shift cable to the outboard.

I do not have a manual and also have no experience w/ outboard shift linkage adjustments. Can someone please provide a detailed step by step process to correctly adjust the shift linkage?

I installed a new water pump kit on this outboard. Think the shift rod that links up in the water pickup might have been moved out of adjustment.

What's the procedure to adjust this?

There is no " adjustment "--at that connector.------------Only thing there is the lower shift rod must be turned tight into the lower unit.---------Look for an adjustment at the shift handle.

OK thanks for the input ... so there is no adjustments to be made at the shift rod (aka shift shaft) that connects the gearcase.

If I understand correctly what you're saying, the adjustments needed in this situation are where the shift cable connects to the outboard (the components in the second picture attached to this post) ... this would be the trunion?
