So bought this motor last week. Former owner said last time out the overheat alarm sounded. He shut it off promptly and put her on the trailer. Water pump is pumping water from the telltale fine. I checked compression 120 psi even all 3 cylinders. I started it up on my stand and after running for a few minutes I put my hand on the cylinder head and thermostat housing. Both were at a hot temp I couldn't keep my hand there for more than a couple seconds. While this was observed I felt the telltale water and it was ice cold. Does this point to something in particular? Thermostat stuck?? Appreciate the help.
Model number j35vl3sie

Sticky occasionally Thermostat or other part in the thermostat compartment. Gasket or spring ? Remove the thermostat completely. Just leave the cover plate off the motor. Start the motor. Check the flow rate coming out of the thermostat housing hole. Just a quick 1 second of WOT speed. Should spray water ALL OVER the place. If flow is terrific ? Buy OEM thermostat, spring and gasket. You must install the parts in the right order. www.crowleymarine.com has great drawings to show reassembly.

Thank you. I removed the thermostat assembly but haven't checked flow yet with it out. I'll report back later in the week. Finally got above freezing in nj so I was able to spend a little time on it today

Be very careful to drain that motor in the VERTICAL Position ONLY. They do self drain in that position.
I do not run my motors in freezing weather. Not worth the risk.
Think about draining in cold weather. If the thermostat does not open due to a very short start and run. Will that cause icing of the water in the cooling system ?

Good points but this motor has been on a stand in my heated garage for a week or so.

telltale indicates good impeller pumping water hot engine indicates poor water circulation around cyl jackets due to blockages.

did you ever pull the cyl head and inspect the jackets for accumulated crud and verify the water supply entry and water exit holes ? gaskets are cheap and pulling the cyl would eleiminate 90 % of the cooling area from being suspect

careful pulling head bolts !!!

Not yet. I was going to start by replacing the thermostat assembly

I pulled the thermostat assembly apart. Found this loose pin. See pic. I put the brass thermostat in my vice and applied heat to the button end and observed no movement. The nipple coming out of the thermostat is like black in color and flexible . I don't see how the tip that is loose connects to the thermostat

Is that tip supposed to be attached to the thermostat? Would that make it stick closed?

I put water into both the large canal where the screwdriver is pointing as well as the small rectangular area using a hose to put the water in there. Both tests resulted in the water quickly making it's way down and out the prop hub. Sound promising?

Those pins are NOT NOT always shown in parts sequence models. Call or go to a place that does Evenrude repairs. DEalers really have those pins for sale.
Can not remember which motor had the pin in it. Might have been used to allow some water to ALWAYS pass thru a cold engine to speed up circulation. I could not find a hole to put it into. Dealer might need the model number to be sure what you will need....That engine has a ton of parts in te thermostat housing. www.crowleymarine.com was my reference.

So the black flexible tip on one end of the thermostat is normal?

You need a dealer with a mechanic to help you. That is the same parts list I saw and used. Maybe a DIY person took yours apart and forgot something. Or added a extra part. Call my local Evinrude / Johnson place. Ask for Butch. will be on off season days / hours. 1-315-686-5622

Well found the issue. Owner told me the pump was changed 2 years ago and it actually produced a decent telltale but looking here lol. Only found the tip of one impeller fin. Rest look like they were smeared into oblivion inside the impeller cup.
