I have a 2001 Johnson 115hp outboard. It turns over great but does not start.
The rectifier and power packs have been replaced. Before I put any more
into this, I'd like to know if anyone has had this problem or what I should
look for. I think it is a simple electrical problem. No spark at the plugs
with a spark plug checker. My next step is the coils. they look worn as did
the rectifier and the power packs. hoping the coils are what is causing this.
The repairs I did had to be done anyway, but, did not solve the problem.
Any Ideas? I ordered a manual but have not received it yet. I have the key and
lanyard. Yes, key is in ignition. Any other thing that acts like the kill switch
I should look for? What is the most common things I should check? I know it will start if i can get spark to the plugs. Can anyone also tell me where to check all the grounds? Thanks.

Both the ign switch and the kill lanyard short the black/yellow wire to ground, killing the spark. Disconnect the black/yellow wire at the powerpack and see if spark returns.

I found the yellow/black wire but it is connected with another wire that is yellow/white to the rectifier? i believe. I disconnected the plug (both wires) but it did not start. I believe this is the 60degree carburated engine. still looking for a solution.

i disconnected the black/yellow but the plug also had a yellow/white wire paired with it. it still did not spark. the continuity check shows the engine side of the plug has continuity but the switch side of the plug shows open. still looking for a solution.

still looking for a fix to this. it is an optical system and maybe the optical part is fouled or has something blocking it's operation? dont know.

Ray, I think it is time for a OMC Service manual. It will have a wiring diaghram and troublwshooting procedures for all ign components.

That motor also uses an electric eye for spark timing, called an OIS sensor, and that has to be tested with an expensive special tool. A new sensor is about $75 and should have been changed when the power pack was.

seahorse is onto it (as usual) do not continue to toss parts at it without some sort of trouble shooting (except the optical sensor)
