2001 Merc 40

I know a guy selling a 2001 40 Hp merc and he says it wont run at all
Im wondering if I could buy it from him and put a 50 or 60hp powerhead on it
but Im new to this and need info im mechanically incline and will figure it ou eventually but i want to get some good info from everyone here before i start turning wrenches. any help will help

40, 50, and 60 share the same powerhead. 40 and 50 had a 1.83:1 gearcase and the 60 was generally set up for pontoon duty and most had the 2.33:1 gearcase. The powerhead should work on the 1.83 leg although I can't provide concrete proof of that.
