I have a 2001 mercury 90hp outboard that will not lock the propeller in forward gear. The engine still rotates the propeller, but with the engine off the propeller should lock in forward. If you rotate the propeller in forward gear there is a load clicking in the lower unit. It will lock in reverse, like it is supposed to. I tried adjusting the shift cable all the way forward, but unfortunately this did not help. The maintenance manual describes how to adjust for this but doesn't specify what the problem is if it doesn't lock into gear. I assume I will have to take the lower unit apart. But would like to get some input into exactly what I am looking for and what part is broken. I am also interested if this a common problem.

Thanks for your time

Regarding adjusting the cable, adjust it so that it takes equal throttle lever throw to achieve either Fwd or Rev. In Fwd, the prop will rachet if the prop is spun clockwise but lock if spun counterclockwise. In Rev, it'll lock both ways. If you're not getting forwad thrust in the water, then the prop hub is spun or the pinion gear is spinning on the driveshaft. Spun hub would be far more likely.

You are trying to fix a "non-problem". By locking in reverse (turning the prop backward by hand) is the same as the engine trying to turn it forward so it will lock. Better put the cable back to its original position or you could create a real problem.
