2001 Chevy Silverado. When I start the truck the head lights come on, day or night. I have never seen the Daytime Running Lights work since I bought this truck (used). Any ideas?

Seems that those bulbs dont last long, you probably need to relace both of them. Also, have you ever noticed how many chevy trucks you see running around with just one driving light on? Always replace bulbs in pairs. If headlights, replace both, if tail lights, replace both as with brake lights, if one side marker goes replace all four. Why, because bulbs are rated in hours so if one goes the other isnt far behind.

Thanks, I'll check the bulbs...however, shouldn't the headlights turn off during the day (based on some kind of light activated relay or switch)? My last truck (GMC Jimmy) did this so I expected the same from my new truck. The reason I ask is that I'm going through bulbs faster than I need to on my trailer because they are aways on.

Yes I do notice how many trucks are driving around with one daytime running light burned out.

There is something else wrong if the trailer lights are on

The headlights are on and the daytime runnings lights are off

On a 2003 the sensor is up on the DASH also on the 2003 if you turn the switch fully counter clockwise it resets the lights if there on

It also does have a full on manual mode ?

tommays

Now there's an interesting web page. "Association of Driver's Against DRL's" :D Thanks.

Turning the headlight switch has no effect whatsoever...day or night.

I just found out about the sensor on the dash. Need to check that when I get home.

I'll let you guys know what I find. Thanks...

Check something.....Start motor...leave in Park...press down on emergency/parking brake....does headlite switch work normally??

If not, (leave park brake ON) stop motor, restart motor. Does headlight switch work normally now??

Try doing the above in the nighttime too...

The DRL only come on when you are in gear. Pull up to a store window and watch. The bulbs used for the DRL suck and blow quite often too. Some people don't bother to replace them.

ok, when I push the "dome override" button twice, the chime rings and the headlights work normally (turn off and on with the headlight switch). So I'm thinking bad sensor?

I could care less about the daytime running lights, I just don't want my headlights on all the time.

Re: 2001 Silverado Daytime lights have never worked

I have a '98 Venture Van. From the factory, the photo sensor (dash mount) will turn on headlights at dusk, headlight switch does nothing....ever. Their destructions say to operate the headlights normally (manually, with the switch), van must be in Park and parking brake engaged... this is ridiculous.

On the second day I owned this van, I changed the system to eliminate this auto headlight B.S. altogether. The fix was simple, push the emergency brake only to the first click. This does not engage the rear brake shoes, but disables the auto headlight function. Later I found a single green wire at the parking brake that goes to ground when the brake is applied. This kills the auto headlight function. The final solution was to ground this wire, release the Park brake, and the light switch works normally.

As for the DRL, the problem I have with it is that the manufacturers don't give you an option to easily disable the feature. If there is a programming option in the Body Control Module, that's another thing, but it's usually not in your owners manual.

I see that you live in Cortland, NY. Is there any chance this truck ever lived in Canada? If so the law in Ontario says the headlights need to be on all of the time so the vehicles sold there are wired differently. Just a thought but it could be that it was modified for Canada.
