I am looking for help with my 2001 Yamaha 225 ox66. I am having some strange starting problems. My motor will start every time when I initially start it up.After several times of shuting off and restarting(with no problems)I will start motor at idle, while retrieving anchor, engine will stall and not re-start. It will turn over and turn over, but will not start. This problem may happen one hour into trip, two hours, you never know. If you allow engine to sit for five minutes, still won't start, if you wait ten minutes she fires right up! I replaced my three fuel pumps and it started perfectly for two trips, now back to original problem. Last trip it actually stalled out at low rpm, I returned to neutral, this time It started up immediatly. I don't get it,my local yamaha dealer says if we can't get it to do this, it will be hard to diagnose the problem. I can NEVER get it to act this way on land on the trailer(of course), starts every time. I have always used yamalube,ring-free, and had all services done at or before 100 hours by my yamaha dealer. It is quite aggravating, as I 'm not very confident to get far from shore. Any help would be deeply appreciated, again thanks,73makocenter

What fuel are you using? When I used the ethanol it was pretty much doing the same thing. When I would first start it up it would fire right up. But after skiing or running pretty hard it would not start. Let it cool down and it would work just fine. That was the last time I used that in my boat.

how many hours on the engine? what maint has been done?
do you have spark when problem occurs?

the efi motors should start and stay running; coughing, stalling are all signals that something isn't right and needs to be addressed before damage occurs.
Here are some maintenance items:

checked low pressure pumps. vacuum between the lp pumps and tank should be between 1-4 hg. higher, there is a fuel restriction, lower, pumps are bad.
clean vst filter. VST should maintain 35 psi
clean pressure regulator screen
clean fuel injector screens
test O2 sensor. Clean. is it rapidly fluctuating between .3-.6v?
are spark plug caps in spec.
water pump change.
thermostats.
link and synch.
oil rod adjustment.

great info on this site to help with that motor.
good luck and post your progress!

Re: 2001 sx225txrz intermitant starting issue

cousinabe,
Thank you for response on my 2001 225 ox66. The engine has 575 hours on it, the only mantainance, has been routine 100 hour services, by Yamaha(central marine St. Pete,Fl.) Normally it seems to be, change water pump, clean o2 censor, replace spark plugs, change fuel/ water seperator, change lower unit oil and that's usually about it.I personally, keep batteries up to date and charged, check all electrical connections and have been replacing the water/fuel seperator much more often(ethenol fuels) and always use ring-free. I have not been able to check if I have spark or not when problem occurs. I'm sure this would greatly help with this mystery! It seems I am either alone or in deep water situations and can't address the problem. As I mentioned, of course, I am NEVER able to get this engine to repeat this problem on land, on the trailer (starts every time), I guess that would be to easy. Would you possibly know a feasible way to check spark while on the water? Most of the things you gave me on the check list, are a little out of my expertise. I will however mention what you have suggested to my Yamaha dealer( If I don't solve the problem). Thank you again for all your help with this issue.
Sincerely,

5 100 hour services doesnt equal a 200 or a 400 hour service.
when was the last time the VST filter was checked?
when was the last time the injector filters were checked?
when was the last time the O2 sensor output voltage was checked?
when was the last time the lift pumps were replaced ?

lot more to that motor than a routine 100 hour service but its in the service guide, mostly.

when cranking with no start,do you get any alarms?
next time it does it, take the hood off, turn the key to on and listen for the fuel pump whine.
should whine about 5 seconds and shut off.
if not you may have a main relay issue.

listen for the whine at key on power when all is well and you will have an idea what to listen for when all is not.
