I was directly to this page for my question...

My husband and I are considering buying my neighbor's boat. We live in Coastal Georgia, therefore, it would be used for salt water fishing, crabbing, etc. The boat was purchased new in 2001 buy an owner in Fla. He had it for about nine months, and he purchased something larger. My neighbor purchased it in 2002, and since then he has used it about a total of 10 times. He has kept it very well maintained. The boat has a 125 HP Mercury Motor. He is asking $6,500 for boat, motor and trailer. It is in excellent condition. My neighbor took us out in it yesterday with my husband at the wheel. He said it was a little rough, but adjusting the trim, etc seemed to even out the ride.

We have never owned a boat, although we are not new to boats. I was wondering what you "experts" thoughts about the type of boat as well as the price.

I understand that Trophy may not have the best reputation. What gives this particular boat a bad reputation...poor construction, rough riding, etc?

Thanks so much for your feedback!!

IMO, Trophy makes a very good boat. Check the NADA price for that model and go from there. I bought a 2000 Trophy 2052 for $6400 6 months ago, the NADA price was $11,000. I like my Trophy more than any other boat I have owned. Some people believe the Trophy is an entry level boat and they need more. I have rented a few other boats in this class while in Florida including Century and Mako and believe the Trophy's are very comparable. Bayliner had a reputation for a cheaply made boat in the 80's and that didn't help Trophy, but it does keep the price down so the average person can afford one. Great value.

Hope this helps.

HI I have a 2000yr- 2002 w/a Bought it used Trophy does he same job as the others. There are no perfect boats. Others may have higher quality workmanship that's about it. A few things I didn't like that could have and should have been done better is the fish boxes they way they easily fill w/ water. The railing bases are not SS but nickel coated lead. The Navigational lights on the front are of a poor design (which by the way are the subject of a recall - due to improper placement on some models as per USCG standards) Another thing I like to change and will seek to on this board is the passenger seat in the cockpit. It should have been a attached to a shelf so that a cooler could stow under it instead of the pedestal they have now.

If it's anything like my 1900 it's a great back bay boat.
