I have an alarm that comes on at intermitent times. The alarm comes on, the engine goes to low speed idle. I idle for about 200 yds and the alarmn goes off and its back to full speed. Sometimes it comes on while running other times it comes on after the motor has been off. Any ideas about what is going on?

sounds like the oil or over heat

oil is sludge in the tank, u need to clean the screen on the motor's tank

how would sludge in the engine tank on a 200 yamaha cause an alarm ?
but I do agree it could be an oil alarm or an overheat,or a loose battery connection alarm.
thats why the visual indicate question.

i do not have a digital tach. when alarm sounds, the motor goes into the low idle mode and will not go over 2500 - 3000 rpms. when the alarm goes off, its fine and off and running. where would the loose battery connection be if that is it, at the cranking battery or on the engine?

Re: 2001 Yamaha 200 hp

without the visual indicate your at the poke-n-hope stage.
if the remote oil tank filter is clogged it wont transfer oil faster than the engine can use it and a low engine oil alarm is possible. if its overheating an overheat alarm will result. if you have a loose connection between the battery and the ECU a loose battery alarm will result.
thats why the digital or analog with visual indicate is so nice.
the gray wire is grounded for overhead visual and the green/red is grounded for low engine level. if the sensor in the remote tank is open or loose no oil will transfer.

its possible to make up your own visual indicate lamps.
