Rodboltor.. others pls helpthe... oil reservoir on the side of my motorunder( cowling) leaks when the engine it tilted up out of the water. The oil level has stayed within the lines on the side of the plastic tank until today and now the alarm is going off. So, obviously need to replace the cap which is leakingalso( has wires on it..) Are there any oil filters which may also need replacing? Despite the leak, I would think the oil pressure would keep this tank filled, but maybe not. I am referring to the tank under the cowling, not the normal oil reservoir which has plenty of oil. Hope u can assist. Thx.

Thanks! Hopefully, can try to replace the filter as first altenative. The leak issue, appears to be unrelated, as it only occurs when engines are tilted up. That said, would like to know what's involved in replacing the cap to the side oil tank to stop leak. I think previous moron who winterized my boat tried to pry it off for some reason.....nice huh! Thx from frmr NAS Glnvw.

The oil cap leaking is a fairly common problem. Someone recommended using a wire tie to secure the cap and it has eliminated the problem for me.

Thanks Tom. Also to the rest, from Yamaha Service Diagrams it appear there are two "strainers" one is within oil reservior, the other is in the line from the oil tank. Should these be totally replaced, or just cleaned? Thank you!

Re: 2001 Yamaha HPDI 150 Oil Problem

In dash low oil level light of my Skeeter bass boat illuminates and motor either stalls or reduces rpm when I am accelerating from a stand still and I start to trim the motor to get up on plane. Sometimes the motor dies and sometimes it recovers sufficent rpm's to keep running. Motor is a 2001 Yamaha 150 HP (VZ150 TLRZ). At first I thought it might have something to do with too much amp draw from the battery which sent a false signal to the oil level sensor. Had cranking battery tested and test showed battery to be in good condition. Onboard oil reservoir is full and the oil level for engine mounted reservoir also displays correct oil level. The stalling and reduction in rpm only happens when I try to trim the motor while taking off or running on plane. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Re: 2001 Yamaha HPDI 150 Oil Problem

it gets confusing to deal with two issues on the same thread.
anytime the oil strainer is removed from the engine oil tank its imperative that the tank be drained first then the seal between the strainer and the tank be retrived AND replaced with a new seal after strainer cleaning.
an HPDI that stalls or stumbles when a high current draw device(trim) is used normally is suffering from a bad battery or cable or cable connection.
while the laptop is connected in diagnosis mode you can monitor what the ECU sees as battery voltage. if it drops, even momentarily, the display will go red indicating an abnormal condition.

Thank you Rodbolt. Please accept my apology if I did not post properly. Did not mean to cause any confusion. Should I have started a new thread? You mentioned attaching a lap-top to monitor the ECU. What special equipment is needed to use my lap-top for the diagnosis, and can an individual purchase said equipment? Thanks again for you help and if I am able to fix this problem with your assistance please tell me how I can repay the favor.
