2002 15HP 4 Stroke $950 good deal?

Question for you all. I have the opportunity to buy a 2002 15HP 4 stoke Merc for $900 -$950. It was used as a kicker, and occcasionally on a 12 foot boat. It appears to be in excellent condition with low hours. I want to put it on a mid 70's 14 foot Starcraft fishing boat. It needs to plane the boat which I'm sure it will no problem, but more importantly I want a motor that will idle down & troll all day.

I have a mid 80's 6 hp merc that has been a great engine just to small for this boat. Any words of wisdom on this particular motor & the purchase price. Also I assume that this motor has the shift in the handle like my 6HP. I really like that as well. Thanks in advance for the input.

I think that the 15hp will be just fine on the back of your 14 footer. I was in the same boat (pun intended) a few years ago. I had a 1964 6hp Merc on the back of my 14' Lund. Ran great but just not enough get up and go. Last year, I purchased a 1985 25hp Merc and began flying across the lake. I paid $250 for the 25hp. Just this week, I had a electric starter and altenator put on the 25. That cost me another $575. Buy the 15hp (or larger) and never look back...enjoy
