2002 90 hp Johnson stalls under load

I have an intermittent problem:

When it happens: I can put it in gear but when I advance the throttle even slightly, the engine stalls. I can restart it but then the same thing happens. If I leave it in neutral I can rev it up and then when I put it in gear it's OK for a while.

My thought is that I have an intermittent electrical problem of some sort which is cause the spark to be weak.

The question is: will a weak spark cause the engine to stall when a load is applied?

dirty carb, or link n sinc. do you have spark all all 4 cylinders? have you check compression of all 4?

I would start with the spark test, then go to the carbs.
