2002 dp-s outdrive problem

I have a 2002 volvo penta dp-s outdrive giving me a problem. when i try to go forward i have to rev the engine up to about 1200rpm and wait about 30 seconds before it will go into gear. going into reverse works perfect. i have adjusted cables, pulled the shift shoe for inspection and i have changed to oil. after changing the gear oil it worked good for a while and now it is starting to act up again. thanks in advance for any help.

Was there water in the gear lube when you first changed it?
If the drive was out of adjustment for a while and not going all the way in, it may be the shift cone is worn and won't hold. Replacement is the only fix if that's the case.

never had water in gear oil. best i can tell adjustments were always correct. someone had mentioned something about a clutch cone. would you happen to know anything about this and how it works?
once it goes into gear it works great

anybody ever work on this outdrive with any suggestions or know a website i can go to and find more info. would rather fix myself than bring to dealer for repairs. thanks.

Trust me, without the special tools, replacing it is going to be next to impossible and you will probably damage something really expensive. The shift cone (aka clutch cone) alone is just over $200.
