We bought a 2002 21' Wellcraft Sportfisher and a Johnson 150 on it in January and haven't been able to run it yet due to some mystery problem with the check engine light.

The problem happens intermittantly. The mechanic says he has it fixed, we tow it home, launch it, and the problem reappears.

It seems like its not getting enough fuel or something is getting caught in the line. We tried hooking it up to another fuel tank and the problem was still there.

We've brought it back to where we bought it at least 4 seperate times (2 1/2 hours away).

So far, the sensor was replaced, the fuel pump was replaced, the fuel line was checked, the vacumn was checked and who know what else but it has stumped the mechanics and we are about ready to loose it. Unfortunatley, Texas' Lemon Laws don't include boats.

Any ideas what the problem is and if it can be fixed? If not, is there any legal action we can take, the boat has more freeway hours than water hours at this point?

Fuel starvation is a common problem with outboards. Try and figure out whats wrong with the boat before taking it to the dealer. Lines, venting, and any other fuel areas. Does it run fine but the light comes on, do you have oil in the gas?

Here is a recap of my 1998 175:
1. it is probably not the boat.
2. When I 1st went out with the main mechanic, we put the boat thru it's paces, as soon as we punched it to WOT, the warning lights came on.
it was a fuel restriction, the mech, made an adj. at the tank output, and said it will be ok.
3.When I ran the boat to my marina, the light came on 2 more times.
4. I called the mechanic, and he came out the next morning.
He installed a new fuel/water seperator, new fuel line from the tank to the bulkhead. We took it for a run,and everythink was fine , and still is.

The owner of the place where I bought the boat called me the next day and told me they were sorry for the problem.\
What they found was a bunch of small dead crickets in the fuel line, that caused the restriction while the boat was in storage.

Howdy 'Babe,
When this random "thing" happens, have you given the priming bulb a squeeze? Is the bulb hard or soft? Have you bumped the primer? Are the plugs wet, dry or what.
Ya see, the more you can tell us the more we can tell you. Give us ALL the gory details and maybe someone can help ya out.

c/6

Hooty

If you replace the anti-siphon valve with a real Johnson valve, the filter housing with a real Johnson filter housing, the proper size hose, and bulkhead fitting(if it has one) this will solve 98 % of your problem. Quality of hose and how it is mounted needs to be checked. I have seen the VRO hose and the fuel hose tied so tight with tie wraps that fuel or oil would not flow thru the hoses, on factory rigged boats. The easy way to find the problem is put the boat in water or test tank with test wheel, vacumn gage as close to the pump as youcan get, or remove sensor and connect there, run engine full throttle, repair the fuel system until the vacumn gets down close to 4 inches.
