Hi guy's. first timer. I have a 2002 50 hp johnson I bought last summer. I have a few issues. first, I have removed this motor from my boat and put it back three times due to other issues, but each time I start it for the first time, after reconnecting, it will go to wide open throttle on its own. I recently did this , and expecting this to happen, prepared for it. sometimes the key will not stop the motor from running, and I have to turn the key off, and choke it out to kill it.
after putting the motor back on the boat, I could somewhat control this. also it would spit and sputter with the flusher connected, but Idled fine in the water. I took it out that same day, and it ran well for a few hours, then, after a brief stop for fishing, I statrted the motor, planed the boat out, we went about 100 yds, and it was as it the fuel line had disconnected. it bogged down and died. It started bogging, then missing, then completly died. I took it out of gear, pulled the throttle back, and it started right up. I planed out again, and this happened again. it Idles fine, even fast idle. we tried pumping the ball as it died, but the ball stayed hard. suggestions from friends say power pack. I replaced the plugs before this, and have since checked the fuel lines up to the carbs. I have noticed it bogging at high speed on rare occation in the past, but it neved died. suggestions??????

Almost more sounds like crud in the high speed jet or in the carb somewhere. Sounds more like the bowl is filling up fine when idling, but you are quickly running the fuel out once you take off, then it runs dry.
The odd idle on muffs vs. in the water is an odd one. Most will usually idle great on muffs then poorly in the water due to the back pressure.
If you have not done any maintenance on the engine since you got it, I'd suggest doing a basic health check, like a good strong spark (you can get a spark tester at any auto parts store for $10, but it must be adjustable), then check compression (again, most auto parts stores sell them, and some will even loan you one). Once you know you have those 2 things, that only leaves fuel as being a problem. If it ends up one of those 2 things is a concern, post about it, and we'll help ya figure it out too.

you are talking about 2 problems, runaway, and then acting like it is starving for fuel/

runaway linc n sinc

starving for fuel, weak fuel pump, dirty carbs, vent not open on fuel tank,

Thanks guy's. I also stopped and talked to a reffered boat mechanic on my way home yesterday, and he said carbs also. I am ordering kits, and I will let you know. by the way, the run away only happens when in neutral, and the throttle is "pumped" to get RPM's up to about half throttle, the runaway happens. it has never happened whille operating normally. I also read a thread saying not to run this motor at too high RPM in neutral. I know this will cause damage just because there is no load on the motor, but there was not reason contained in the thread. I am going to try to find it again, and ask.

Re: 2002 Johnson 50 hp shuts down

think I found the problem. about a pint of water in the oil reservoir. while I was removing the VRo and associated hoses, I removed the main oil line, and a few drops of water came out when I pulled the line off. I pumped the ball, and only water came out through about 10 pumps of the ball. I drained and cleaned the tank, VRO, and hoses with carb cleaner and reassembled. feild trials tomorrow. I did find out that this model motor can have 1 or 2 carbs, and there are 3 different carbs that will work with it. thanks for your help

i would put a fuel and water separator. clear the carbs and fuel lines of water.

check compression to make sure no damage was done:D

i would also do a decarbon on that engine usely that is what cause them to run away like that the carbon soaks up the oil and fuel and fires up so even if switch is turned off it wont stop till all burned out a good cleaning with sea foam should do the trick
