I would like to hear from anybody with hands on experience with a 01 or 02, 75 or 90hp Merc 4 stroke. This is a great site but it also can scare you to hear of some of the problems people have with different outboards. I am looking a purchasing a 02 90 hp 4 stroke and would like to hear how reliable they are, what kind of hole shot to expect and what kind of life to expect from this motor with out having it in the shop every week. I currently have a 1987 85hp Force that I plan to use for a anchor next year, any advice on the new motor would be greatly appreciated.

radsrh,

From a service perspective, I haven't seen hardly any issues with these, but then again, they are fairly new, and we sell far more 2 strokes than 4 strokes, so it is hard to comment on. Most 4-strokes idle smoother, are quieter, and are good for pontoon or low noise applications.

As for what you read on these boards, take everything with a grain of salt. Every comment on here is everyones opinion, and everyone brings their own biases, opinions and loves to the board with them, and that is reflected in their comments. I have been to many forums about PC's, and after reading some of the posts, would draw to the conclusion that some of the best equipment I have ever owned was worthless - 500 posters just agreed. But then I began finding a few "rogue" threads that expressed my same sentiments, and I realized that the vocal majority was in fact the actual minority.

No offense to anyone here, but this board swings predominately to OMC/BMC, and there is nothing wrong with that. Around the area where I live, that is a foreign concept, most people "know" that inland bay, inlets and less than 10 miles offshore is done with a Mercury, far offshore is either Optimax or Yamaha twins, and the only use for an OMC on is an aluminum jon boat. Suzuki's are "them rice-burning crotch-rocket things - they don't make boat engines...", and "why would you put a Honda generator motor on a boat????" I am learning a lot to the contrary about Hondas and Suzukis from this board, but you see that certain biases are prevalent everywhere.

The common montra on this board is find a local dealer that supports what you are looking to buy - it makes all the difference.

One last thing, I don't think there is a "bad" new motor, from any manufacturer, they all have certain differences and advantages. Find the one you like, find a local reputable dealer that carries that brand, and go fishing, or skiing, or pontooning, or whatever else you do....

Re: 2002 Merc 90hp 4 stroke

If the 4 stroke is a carb,I've got info. in writing from Mercury Marine ,Consumer Affairs Manager, Canada. " Carbureted engines may have a small hesitation or "bog" under hard acceleration. This is an inherent characteristic of this engine rather than a defect.A carbureted engine meters fuel mechanically through a combination of linkages.
I purchased a 2001 40 4 stroke carb on a 16' Tracker consule boat. I was not happy from day one with this " SMALL" bog that it had . The dealer didn't advise me of this "SMALL" bog being normal. Anyway if I new then what I know now ,I never would have purchased that motor.
The fight is still on with Mercury Marine and my Dealer.
So if your considering buying a new or used Mercury 4 stroke carb. A "SMALL" BOG is open to interpertation.

Re: 2002 Merc 90hp 4 stroke

I have an '02 90 hp Merc 4-stroke with about 15 hrs. on it. No problems yet. Haven't noticed any " bog " when given full throttle. This engine is carbed. Mine is mounted on a pontoon. These engines have Yamy power heads and Merc lower units. My previous engine was a 80 hp Yamy carbed 4-stroke. It was an excellant outboard! When dealer removed cowling on Merc--I saw the Yamy power head and bought it. Keep in mind, their heavy--approx 386 lbs.. By the way, Yamy went to bottom of lake in a storm - Good Luck !
