I have a 2002 Mercury 90 HP 3cyl. engine and at idle it keeps bogging out on me. What can the problem be? Could it be bad fuel? Could anyone let me know what the problem maybe?

Thanks,
Rick

It bogs while idling? Or bogs as you throttle up from idle?

When is last time carbs were cleaned?

Bogging means that your engine is not getting sufficient quality fuel to explode and deliver the required power pulse. Sooooo why isn't it getting fuel, or if it is, is it quality fuel?

Like Mr. Boni said, dirty carbs could be a problem, if you have been diddling with the low speed jets on the carbs you could have them set in too far (too lean), if you have old fuel it may not have adequate BTUs.

First have you been diddling with the jets, if so put them back where you had them.

Second get new-clean fuel with some Sea Foam in it for grins.

Third, pop the carbs and clean them out. You really don't need a carb kit for that engine. Other than the idle screw, there is nothing in it to change other than gaskets, if you choose to change them. I just did mine on the same engine and used no parts at all. But I did ensure that the alum castings fit the existing indentations in the gaskets before I tightened the screws. The only other thing you want to check is in the bottom of the bowl, the high speed brass orifice and ensure it is clean. Compressed air and some aerosol carb cleaner in the reverse direction will fix that. I had crud in mine and it took the compressed air in both directions to dislodge it where I could see it was there. Solved the problem I had.

Mark

Yes, it does bog out when idling and it's been awhile since I've cleaned them.

Where are the carbs located on that particular outboard?

Thanks,
Rick

I don't understand this statement after the one preceding it. If you have done them before you know where they are. If you had someone else do them for you before, then get someone else to do them for you again. Having to ask where they are located speaks volumes!

Here's my suggestion:

1) Remove the engine cover (you do know how to do that -- right?)
2) Get into the boat.
3) See that big black, cover looking thing (called a silencer) that is directly facing you?
4) Remove the silencer (you've done this before -- right?)
5) See the three round things that are pointing at you? Those are the three carburetors (don't touch them)
6) Take the boat to a shop so the job gets done correctly.

1} I did not clean the carbs the first time.
2] I'm trying to save a little money.
3] I'm new at this.
4] I do not want to deal with dumb asses like yourself and your dumb *** buddy the Fleet *******!

Thanks for the character reference. Speaks volumes. If you don't know where the carbs are you obviously don't know anything about servicing carburetors and you best leave it to someone who does. But with your attitude, do as Silvertip suggested and have a go at it. Then after you make your mess, take your box of parts to whomever does your carbs and pay him not only for servicing your carbs but also for cleaning up your mess.....if he can find all the parts. And while you are at it maybe you need to find something else to do with your time as you are wasting ours!

"Yes, it does bog out when idling and it's been awhile since I've cleaned them" as you said yourself does deserve the reply. Don't say things that contradict yourself and call others names.
