First off, great forum! I've got a question that hopefully some off you may have run into before. I now there may be a few different causes but thought I'd ask.

I recently purchased a used 2002 Yamaha 15hp 4 stroke motor for my 14' flat bottom. Mainly to do a little fishing from but mostly duck hunting. I just took it out for the first time this past weekend. Up until now I've only "idled" it in the driveway and once it gets warmed up it idles really nice. Anyway, on to the problem. After it gets warmed up and I'm running across the bay, it will only run for maybe 2-3 minutes and then start sputtering and maybe half of the time die but at a minimum you have to stop and take it out of gear and baby it for a minute or two until it regains and can then take off again, (but for only 2-3 minutes because it happens all over again). The first time it happened, I looked down at the clear glass fuel line filter and didn't see any fuel in it so I pumped it back up a few times and thought that maybe it just wasn't pulling enough fuel in. However, the very next time it started to sputter I had the bulb in my hand already and pumped it up to see if it kept it from happening but did not. The fuel line and bulb is installed with the "arrows" pointing towards the motor and I did not see any leakage in the line at all. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? I had my wife and my two sons, (7 and 4) on the boat and it kept me from venturing out too far for safety reasons. My 7 year old did end up catching his first keeper Redfish at 20-1/4". We were both pumped!

Thanks in advance for any input.

It could be a number of things.

1. Gas tank not venting properly. Take the gas cap off and run it like you normally would. If the problem doesn't occur then put the cap back on. If the problem shows up once the cap is back on then the gas tank isn't venting properly.
2. Debris restricting fuel flow. It could be in the gas tank or fuel lines. While you have the gas cap off look down into the tank and see if you see any trash or dirt. Take the fuel line loose that goes from gas tank to motor and check it for debris.
3. Bad bulb. The primer bulb has a check value inside of it which keeps the fuel sytem pressured up. The older they get that check value will quit working correctly won't hold pressure.
4. Dirty carb. If you have not ever taken the carb apart and cleaned it, it's probably dirty. You can take it apart and clean it or try running some carb cleaner through it may clean it.

Gook luck.

Judging from your other post you seem confident your problem is in the tank and/or fuel hose from tank to motor. A quick and easy way to test this would be to get you a 5 gal portable tank with a new fuel hose and bulb. Disconnect your old fuel hose from the motor and connect the new hose with portable tank. Run the boat and see how it performs. Running the boat in a trash can of water is not nearly as accurate to test performance as actually getting it on the water. I'm not familar with your area, but maybe there is a nearby lake you can go to.

Good Luck.

Yeah, there are closer places that I could take it to run it. I'm just not that familiar with those areas. I may just run down anyway and see if the new tank and line works out. If it doesn't I can still just deal with it for the morning and get some fishing in anyway. Wouldn't be a total loss.

I like the way you think.:) Good luck with the new tank I hope it fixes your problem. If it doesn't, I would look at the carb next. When you put gas in the new tank you might put a little carb cleaner in with it, can't hurt.

New tank, new fuel line, filled up with new gas and it ran like a charm. Never once even thought about hesitating. Thanks for the help guys.
