Hello all, I have a boat that gets used in salt water most of the time and the 9.9 trolling motor has not been used in 4 years. My dad wanted me to take it and use it because he can't run it as much as it needs. I took it out today and the 9.9 fired up and after a few minutes ran pretty well. The throttle is all froze up on the tiller handle. I noticed a lot of white corrosion. Has anyone dealt with this problem? Are they serviceable, everything seems pretty corroded. The throttle moves fine at the carb so it must be in the cable-handel.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

White corrosion is caused by the dis similar metals (steel going into aluminum). The salt has field day with the aluminum parts causing them oxidize and corrode. Take apart the tiller handle carefully, all screws may need the help of a impact screw driver to get out (to minimize the chances of them breaking) and all bolts should be worked slowly and patiently to come out. Done use more than moderate palm pressure to break them free, more than that and the corrosion may bind on the threads and snap the bolts. Back them out, spray PB blaster and work them in. A MAP gas torch used around the bolts helps tons. Soak EVERYTHING with PB blaster about 24 hr before working. Repair your issue and put all back together with antisieze. I live on the coast and 99.9% of motors I work on are severely corroded, just be patient with it taking it apart....rush nothing
