Looking at an older boat that was repowered with one of these. Rigged by shop with yamaha guages. Anything I should know about this engine? I read about a few recalls, but couldn't find much info.

Bonus question- want to guess how fast I'd run with this engine? Guessing the loaded boat would weigh about 5200# including boat, engine, and fuel. Engine is on a bracket.

look at the connectors for the driver/rectifier. if its gray it needs an update. make sure the bushing kit and the link rod updates were done.some very early ones had some squeek issues but its no worries and can be taken care of at the first water pump change.

take the model/serial number to a dealer, they can run it and tell you what has been done and what needs to be done.

Re: 2002 Yamaha F225

spoke to dealer today. engine had recall work performed concerning the bushing kit. he said the engine management system recall does not apply as this setup does not have the optional fuel management system (does have yamaha digital gauges). makes sense.

he said no hr meter, but once the engine is commissioned for the season, he could check the ecu and tell me hrs. he estimated 240 hrs.

said boat prob tops out at 40-41 mph, cruises at 27 mph. at cruise gets 8 gph. sound right?

i would call the boat a little underpowered, so specific question on this engine- will pushing it to get on plane when i'm loaded with people kill it? does have tabs to help.

if your boat has tabs definately use them to get on the plane. if you are regularly going to have a heavy load re-prop your engine to suit. take note of your maximum achievable rpm with a "normal" load, normal is whatever you take with you all the time. this number should be at or very near 6000rpm.

never had a 4 stroke.

what is the general maintenance on these engines? if i buy the boat, i'll get the manual, but i'd like to know what questions to ask the seller. if this engine has 240 hrs on it, what major pm's should have been performed to date? thanks-

Re: 2002 Yamaha F225

ask for the service history. hire someone from a yamaha dealer to do a pre purchase inspection on the engine. they will give you a written report to help you make a decision. the 100 bucks it will cost is money well spent.

this engine should have a link rod update also.

if it does 41mph its not underpowered. 4strokes dont have the stand up and kick you in the pants the 2stroke does, they have half the bangs. im finding a lot people prefer to go light on the prop, lose a few mph on the top end for better holeshot. the only downside is managing your w.o.t rpm. a fair trade imo, a little easier on the engine also.

like i said. look at the connector on the driver. if its gray it needs an update if they are blue your ok. if the bushings on the throttle tower gears are black your ok. make sure the link rod updates have been done. and make sure the hourly OR annual maint is done, not just by hours alone.
