I AM GOING TO REPLACE THE STARTER ON MY 2003 125 HP MERCURY OUTBOARD. I AM NOT A MECHANIC BUT AM SOMEWHAT MECHANICALLY MINDED. IS THIS SOMETHING I CAN DO MYSELF?? ARE THERE ANY DO'S AND DONT'S? ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.<br /><br />THANKS,<br /><br />CHET FREEMAN

Chet, it is mostly a "nuts and bolts" job. Disconnect the electrical to the motor before you begin. You may want to snap a few digital photos as you disassemble to assist in reassembly, or if you have a photographic memory...<br /><br />Visually match the new starter to the old one before you try to install it, to assure it is the same one!

Definitely disconnect the battery to eliminate the possibility of making sparks. Make sure the starter is the problem. Why replace the most expensive part of the system before ruling out all the cheap stuff. Also, your local auto-electric (starter/generator rebuilder) may be able to rebuild the unit much cheaper than a new starter.
