i have not heard anything bad about them. it is based on the tried and true Johnson 2 cylinder motors.

Johnson are a great twin cylinder motor. Good luck at the auction. If you do get it remember to "wake it up" if you have not seen it running before the sale and replace the impeller as well.

This model was made by Bombardier-not sure if it is the ''oil injection'' model or uses mixed gas.I am a firm believer in ''the simpler the better'' motto and would prefer mixed gas-heard too many horror stories of engines burning out due to the oil injection feature not being right.But-the motor appears brand new-even though its a 2003 model.

according to BRP site the 2003 Johnson 30 hp is a premix fuel system, not an auto mixing system.

Thanks-any idea what this motor sold for new-and what would a fair price be for it now, in virtually new condition?

I'm trying to get ANY information on this engine-evn though it was built by BOMBARDIER-is it virtually the same as all of Johnson 2 strokes? Is the quality and engineering the same?

I think so, i don't think they reengineered the product line.

BRP now has the E-Tec (Current DI technology) motors down through 25 and 30HP and has discontinued the old OMC carbed motors as the E-Tec design has expanded. They no longer market a carbed 25 or 30 HP. This has been the BRP stategy since they picked up the OMC pieces around 2001. There still are a few common parts, but the E-Tecs have vastly different ignition and fuel/oil handling from the prior generation motors and are generally superior to any OMC products.

so-are you saying this 2003 Johnson model J30RLSTB is the new E-TEC technology and not the old carbed 30 hp twin?If so-what are the advantages over the old model?

No most of the Johnson badged motors were carbed and the 2003 is definitely not an E-Tec. BRP continued to make the J carbed motors until a year or two ago ... the 25/30 HP E-Tecs were introduced in the past year, I believe. They started with the larger block V6's, introduced the small block V6's in 2007 model year and I think the in-line 3 cylinder motors around 2005 or 6. The 2 cylinder motors have been among the most recent product introductions. The general strategy has been to discontinue carbed motors as the E-tecs in a given size have been released for sale.

Nothing wrong with the carbed 2 cylinder motors, but the E-Tecs are way more fuel efficient (~ 1/3 less) and use way less oil (typically use averages 85 or 90:1).

That is a carb motor.

so-while the E-TEC is new technology and offers superior gas efficiency-is the older carb model more simple and less likely to break down? I always figure there's got to be trade off somewhere...

Simpler, but not necessarily less likely to breakdown, but more suitable for DIY.
