2003 Evinrude Ficthram 225 sputters

the motor was built in 2003 but is 2004 model I believe. I have a problem with it sputtering when I give it gas then the engine light and alarm come on. the other day I found water in the fuel separators and changed both of them I changed the plugs added marine gas additive and put a Racor fuel/water separator with a glass bottom and drain.If I shut it and restart more than a few times it shuts down and I have to have a evinrude mechanic come out and wipe the error code which I did today.He mentioned that he got an error code 57 cleared it and the motor started fine. He left and then it started to sputter and the alarms came back on and engine light. I called him back but he wont be out to the boat till tomorrow. He got it running but apparently didnt isolate the problem. Any thoughts on what is causing this sputter and bogging down. I looked in the bowl on the Racor and it didnt appear to have any water in it. The fuel bulb seemed to be soft until I pumped it again leading me to think it might be the fuel pump.

check for fuel leaks with the motor cover off & primer with bulb of no leaks,start & check for leaks.is the motor overreving.whats the motors model & serial numbers.

motor idles smooth but if I give it gas it immediately starts to sputter and alarm sounds and engine light comes on. then if I shut it and turn it back on it idles smooth again . also if I just let it idle a while it will sometimes start to sputter a bit and alarm.

every time you get a check engine light are you sure its just a code 57.

Heres the latest, you wont believe what happened today.Mechanic showed up this morning, kicked it over still sputtered and bogged down he called OMC (Evinrude) They told him a number of things that he needed to Check. He asured me that he felt that he had it figured out and would have it running by late afternoon. I drove down to the Marina and noticed that my boat was not in the slip. I was excited that he must be taking it to test drive it. I hung around the dock for an hour or so then called the shop. They said he was out testing it but they got a call that it was stranded and he needed a tow.About an hour later they called me back to say " he had it hooked up to the lap while test driving it" he heard a loud noise, the computer never sent an alarm or code when he examined the motor it had thrown a rod through the block.....Yikes I was glad it was him not me that had taken it out. Its under warranty thank god,it only has about twenty hours on it. Now tomorrow i have to make calls to OMC my Insurance broker etc.

hopefully he will get the trouble fixed with the new powerhead from bombarier will see.....

Your motor is a 2003 not a 2004.<br /><br />Code 57 is a high rpm with a low throttle position sensor setting. It is usually caused by a leaking oil pump or fuel pump diaphragm making the motor rev up while the throttles are closed. It can also be triggered by revving in neutral and slamming the throttle shut.<br /><br />A knowledgable tech would have caught that as soon as the laptop was hooked up.<br /><br />I doubt the thrown rod was caused by the code unless the motor overreved, but that would be in the computers memory.

Thanks, Im waiting for the service center to call evinrude and make their report,I asked them to call me after they study the computer codes Im also curious how many hours the motor shows I hardly used it Im thinking somewhere in the area of only 25- 35 hours
