I have been told by many that after my warranty is up, which it is I should disconnect my vro system and start premixing my oil/gas as the system is undependable. Others I have talked to have advised me that they have had no problems with the later model systems. Any takes on this as I am undecided as to what to do.

Everyone will have an opinion on this but...... I would leave it alone... I would add an inspection of the drive gear, to your yearly inspections.... They in the most part, rarely fail.... The newer models have a sensor that detects shaft spinning. If you inspect the gears every once in a while, you will gain more confidence.... :D

I would call Merc for correct manual and have them ship to you, about 35.00. Become an expert on the alarm system. Service engine per manual. I always thought the weak part of the Merc oiler was the plastic gear on the crank shaft. I keep hearing about them now using steel gear not sure. The alarm for the pump senses the rotation of the pump drive system. If the pump dont turn the alarm sounds. It is up to the operator to turn the key off to pervent engine damage. The oil and fuel is mixed before the carbuators, so carbs always has oil, should be enough to shut engine down after alarm sounds without engine damage.

Forgive me bush cat, but I have to disagree. Oil injectors are bad news. What do you think would happen if the injector went out, with no alarm, and straight fuel starts to run through your motor @ WOT.
I have never heared anything good about oil injectors. Everyone I know says that whenever their warrenty on their motor runs out, away with the injector. Always trust your own premix, not such a hassle when refueling, and no worrying about maintenance on that injector.

According to mercury the problem with the oiling system isn't exactly the plastic gear. It's actually the bushing that the oilpump drive shaft rides in. Due to differeing fuel additives from place to place, that bushing has a tendancy to swell with contact to some of those additives. When the bushing swells it grabs the shaft and causes it to chew up the plastic gear. (the problem doesn't happen everywhere, and also seems to happen more to a motor that has sit for a while)

The fix I was shown when at mercury school was to remove the oil warning system, (because it's the bushing with the magnet for the oil warning system), and replace the bushing with a "new" (brass) design (minus the magnet etc..).

That's the word from mercury.. take it as you like..

Scott..

Funny thing is that the 4 cylinder motors use a plastic gear on the oil pump as well, and you don't see these sorts of failures on them (they also don't have the oil pump warning system). It's usually only the V6 motors..
