I am looking into getting a boat with a Mercury 150 Saltwater V-6, but when the inspector was running the engine at idle with earmuffs the engine was not peeing. It would shoot water when we reved up the RPM's, but even with higher RPM's it would shoot water but not a steady flow.

The inspector contacted the Mercury manuf. and was advised for this particular engine that the water hose with earmuffs does not produce enough water volume to produce a steady flow. We were able to run the engine at idle and flucate the RPM's for about 15 to 20 min without it shutting down. We were also still able to touch it, it was hot, but we were still able touch without getting burned.

This is my first boat so I want to hear from the more experineced about this issue. Hopefully this is normal because I am tired of fishing off the pier. Thanks for any advice about this issue.

You will not get a good telltale at the output on the flusher or even on the water for that matter. They trickle for a little until the thermos open or they build up enough back pressure to push the poppets off they'er seats. What you want to watch for is how much water you have flowing out at the exhaust just above the cavitation plate, near the tailstock, and how much you have exiting the prop hub,and your actual op temp. You have a 5 year old engine operated in salt.If you do'nt know when that waterpump was last done you are now due for no other reason than to make sure it will still come apart.

Hondon,

Thanks for the reply. I feel a little better about the motor now. Once we get everything finalize I will look into getting the water pump changed out.

Do you know know where I could find the service manual for the Mercury 150?
